How To Install A Wood Door In Steel Framing: The Installation Process Of A Wood Door In Steel Framing

The Installation Process Of A Wood Door In Steel Framing

The majority of homeowners prefer steel-stud framing when it comes to adding partition walls in a house or basement, due to the reason that it is lighter compared to wood and doesn't produce sawdust. However, contrary to the wood, steel studs at a doorway can bend out of shape when wood doors are opened and closed. This problem can be solved by installing wood bucking as well as blocking at each side of the doorway. Cutting, mortising, as well as drilling wood jambs and doors for hinges and hardware, require skill and special tools.

Part 1: Bucking And Blocking

  • Measure The Distance Using A Measuring Tape
First of all, compute the distance from the floor to the bottom of the header that runs through the doorway opening with the help of a measuring tape. Cut 2 pieces of one-by-two- pine or framing lumber to length as bucking, with the help of a handsaw.
  • Place A Piece Of Bucking In The Channel
Now, place one piece of bucking in the channel at the back, or outer side, of a stud at one side of the doorway, and flat in opposition to the channel. Attach or affix the upper and lower portions of the piece at the stud with the help of C-clamps.
  • Install The Bucking In The Channel
Next, set up a cordless drill having a screw-tip attachment. Drive pairs of 1 1/2-inch self-tapping screws across the face of the stud as well as into the bucking at 12-inch intervals from top to bottom. Take out the clamps and repeat the process in order to install the bucking in the channel of the stud at the contradictory side of the doorway.
  • Cut A Piece Of Lumber To Length As A Block
Compute the distance betwixt the face of the bucking and the next stud outward at one side of the doorway. Cut or trim a piece of one-by-two lumber to length as a block.
  • Cut And Install The Block
Finally, place the block flat betwixt the stud and bucking at the midpoint betwixt the floor and header. Install the block with the help of a pair of screws through each steel stud and into the corresponding ends of the block. Repeat the process in order to cut and install a block on the contradictory side of the doorway.

Part 2: Install Wood Door

  • Determine Which Way The Door Will Swing Open
First of all, ascertain or establish which way the door will swing open when you install it. Position the prehung door unit at one side of the door opening, making sure that the barrels of the hinges are facing in the direction where the door swings open. Do not take out the temporary stops that prevent the door from swinging on the hinges.
  • Work From The Opposite Side Of The Unit
Now, work from the other side of the unit, the push-side of the door, and adjust the unit into place in the doorway. Push the jamb at the hinged side of the unit in opposition to the face of the steel stud at that side of the doorway. For drywall, fit the vertical alignment of the jamb in order to make sure that the distance from the outer edge to the edge of the stud is 5/8 inch from top to bottom. When it comes to plaster, the edge of the jamb is at least 7/8 inch from the edge of the stud.
  • Drive A Screw Across The Face Of The Jamb
Drive a screw across the face of the jamb near the upper end as well as into the stud. Take hold of a 24-inch level vertically in opposition to the edge of the jamb, and fit the lower end of the jamb, as necessary, in order to make sure that the edge of the jamb is plumb. Install extra screws across the face of the jamb at 12-inch intervals from top to bottom.
  • Align The Outer Edge Of The Jamb
place or arrange the outer edge of the jamb at the opposite side of the unit consistently & evenly with the edge of that stud as before. Install wood shims into the gap betwixt the outer face of the jamb and the stud at 12-inch intervals from top to bottom. Install the shims just enough that they remain in place without affecting the alignment of the door as well as the jamb. Drive screws across the face of the jamb at each shim.
  • Install Screws In The Hinged Side Of The Jamb
Pull off the temporary stops with the help of pliers and swing the door open. Install screws in the hinged side of the jamb, 2 inches above as well as below each hinge, 1/2 inch from the edge of the doorstop trim.
  • Install Wood Shims Betwixt The Jamb And Stud
Close the door and note the gap betwixt the edge of the door that is drilled for a door handle and the face of that jamb. Install wood shims betwixt the jamb and stud, as necessary, in order to make sure that the gap is uniform from top to bottom.
  • Open The Door And Install Screws Across The Face Of The Jamb
Open the door before installing screws across the face of the jamb at the handle side at 12-inch intervals from top to underside, 1/2 inch from the edge of that doorstop trim.
  • Install Wood Shims
Install wood shims at several points in the gap betwixt the top of the doorjamb and the steel-stud header, & make sure that the shims do not push the jamb down. Drive pairs of screws across the top jamb and into the header at each shim.
