Step By Step Easy Guide Of Installation Of A Screen Door

Installing a screen door opens up the home and the owner can enjoy a cool breeze without any of the unwanted pests. The step by step guide for installing the screen door are mentioned below:

Step 1: Choosing A Screen Door

  1. Meaure Outside Of The Door Frame: The first step is to measure the outside of the door frame. It is important to remember that not all door frames are perfectly square, so the user must account for this, take the length as well as the width measurements along the top, bottom, and middle portions of the frame.
  2. Gap Around The Entire Of The Door: Minus 1/4 inches right from the shortest length and the width measurements. There must be at least a 1/8 inch gap around the door as this will help to ensure that it will fit properly.
  3. Complement The Exterior Of The House: Choose a style which will complement the exterior decor of the house. The screen doors are mostly the focal points to the front and the side entries of the house. So it is important to choose a material, color, as well as the style that will best match the home. The most common screen door is made from the wood, but there are also aluminum and the vinyl screen doors.

Step 2: Installing A Screen Door

  1. Measurements: Measure both the height as well as the width of the doorjamb with the help of a measurement tape. If in case the measurements vary, then use the smallest measurements.
  2. Trim The Screen Door: In order to ensure that the screen door fit to the door jamb trim the height and width, if necessary, with the help of woodcutting saw that must be equipped with a fine-tooth blade. It is important to remember that before cutting the wooden screen door, there should be a minimum clearance of about 1/4 inch from both sides as well as the top of the door. While installing the middle hinge one, align it in the center between the top and bottom hinges. Using a power drill pre-drill the hinge mounting holes with an appropriate sized drill bit. After the drilling is done then attach the hinges to the door edge with the help of a screw gun and the hinge mounting screws.
  4. Wooden Shims: The wooden shims are used to align the screen door in the doorjamb for maintaining the 3/8-inch clearance in between the screen door and the bottom of the doorjamb.
  5. Mark The Locations: On the doorjamb mark the locations for the hinge screw holes using a pencil. Remove the screen door and then using the power drill pre-drill the mounting screw locations. Attach the hinges to the doorjamb with the help of hinge mounting screws and the screw gun.
  6. Install A Door Handle: For the door handle the user needs to pre-drill 2 holes into the screen door frame and then attach the handle with the mounting screws.
  7. Install An Eye Screw: At about 6 inches from the hinge side of the door install an eye screw on the top of the doorjamb. After that install another eye screw on the top of the frame of screen door about 12 inches from the handle side of the screen door.
  8. Door Tension Spring: Finally hook each end of the door tension spring with the eye hook. Check the door for smooth operation and then make adjustments as necessary.
