How To Install A Light Fixture With 3 Wires: Proper Procedure Of Installing A Light Fixture With 3 Wires

Proper Procedure Of Installing A Light Fixture With 3 Wires

Light fixtures including pendants and chandeliers can immediately brighten up a room. Installing a light fixture is a simple do-it-yourself project provided you use the right tools & materials as well as follow the right technique. The steps are generally the same as they are when installing light fixtures on ceiling. The important thing to consider is whether the electric junction box can support the lighting fixture or not. A junction box contains the wiring connections in the ceiling support. In order to install a light fixture with three wires, collect the tools & materials required for the process first & then go through the below-mentioned step by step procedure carefully:

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Voltage Detector
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire Nuts
  • Wire Strippers
  • Work Light
  • Light Fixture

Step 1: Shut Off Power

For some of the fixtures, you can shut the power off at the switch, however, it is strongly recommended to always shut the power off at the breaker. Sometimes it is possible that the breakers on your electrical panel will be attached a label to. If not, then you simply need to shut off breakers before using the voltage detector in order to make sure that the area you are going to be working in isn’t “hot”. (The voltage detector will beep as well as light up when a current is present).

Step 2: Connect Wires

There are usually three wires in a standard box for a light fixture, a white (neutral), black (current), and copper (ground). A permanent fixture may comprise of a plate that will be connected to the two screw holes on either side of the box, and it is extremely easy to have that done before you connect the wires, especially on a heavy fixture that will need to be supported while wires are being connected. You can connect the wires to the fixture in several ways. In this case, the wires are covered or enclosed around screws in order to make a connection. There may also be wires of matching colors in the fixture that would be connected to the ceiling wires with the help of wire nuts. In either case, use the wire stripper in order to get rid of 3/4? of wire sheathing. To secure to screw connections, bend the wire into a U-shape, enclose or cover around the screw, then crimp the wire closed as well as tighten the screw. White wire is connected to silver screw, black wire to gold screw, & ground wire to green screw. In order to secure or fix wires to wires, twist like-colored wires together before twisting a wire nut over them.

Step 3: Attach Fixture To Box

This simple pull-chain fixture was secured or affixed with two screws that go directly into the box, however, you may also have only one screw directly on to the mounting plate. As soon as the fixture is mounted, install a light bulb, turn the breaker back on, as well as let there be light.
