How To Install A Floating Countertop: Easy Steps & Items Needed For Installing Floating Countertop

The granite countertops can't be drilled, bolted, or screwed on. The floating granite countertops need to be glued onto large 1/4-inch steel brackets by using the adhesive. This type of bracket is also famous as a floating bracket, bolts onto the back of your existing island peninsula. The bracket has a large and flat platform on the top that supports your granite countertop while cantilevering it over the edge of your countertop. Almost anyone can install the granite countertop by using a drill/driver and an assistant to help you lift it.

Easy Steps & Items Needed For Installing A Floating Countertop

If you want to install a floating countertop by yourself then you just need to collect all the required items which are mentioned below & then go through the mentioned steps carefully:

Things Needed For This Project

  • Floating Countertop Brackets
  • Drill/Driver
  • 1/8-Inch Drill Bit
  • 1/4-By-1 1/2-Inch Lag Bolts
  • 1/4-Inch Nut Driver
  • 1/4-Inch Socket
  • Ratchet
  • Silicone Caulk Adhesive

Steps For This Process

  1. First of all, you need to divide your island into 24-inch sections and then you have to mark it. You must have one bracket every 24 inches. If your spacing doesn't work out constantly on the ends then you need to move your spacing’s to the left or right and then split the difference on both ends.
  2. The next thing is to place the brackets centered on the marks. Next, you need to slide your bracket up until the top of it squares against your lip or fascia on your existing countertop. You need to drill through the 6 predrilled holes in your bracket, into the back of your island peninsula by using your drill/driver and 1/8-inch drill bit.
  3. Now it's time to place 1/4-by-1 1/2-inch lag bolts in the holes and then you need to tighten them moderately by using a 1/4-inch nut driver on your drill/driver. Finish tightening them by using a 1/4-inch socket and a ratchet. Do this with all of the brackets.
  4. Finally, you need to apply clear silicone caulk to your platformed tops of the brackets. By using an assistant you need to place your granite countertop centered on the brackets and then you have to apply a bead of silicone to your perimeter around the base of the platform where your granite countertop contacts the bracket. Smooth the silicone with your wet fingertip. Allow the applied silicone to dry overnight before using your countertop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not try to attempt to handle granite countertops by yourself. Always try to contact an assistant.
  • The floating brackets require 1 1/2-inch thick plywood in order to secure them. If the island base doesn't have a 1 1/2-inch plywood, you can screw small pieces of plywood to the back on the inside of your cabinet for backing.
  • Floating brackets also come in different heights. Choose the one you prefer the most.
