Methods To Kill Furniture Beetles

Furniture or wood-boring beetle is a term used to describe a number of beetle species that can destroy the wood. Wood-boring beetles are mostly known as wood borers and some of its species are Lyctid, Anobiid, Buprestidae, and Bostrichid. There are several methods to kill or get rid of furniture beetles as mentioned below;

Insecticide Method

The first method is to treat the infested furniture with insecticide for which the user needs to follow the below-given steps;
  1. Purchase Insecticide: First, the user needs to purchase insecticide that should contain unrestricted disodium octaborate tetrahydrate. Besides that, there are several other types of insecticides available in the market that can only be used by professionals with a license.
  2. Remove Furniture Covering: After that, the user needs to remove the furniture covering such as paint, stain, or sealer off the furniture by sanding it down with 120 grit sandpaper. The step will help the insecticide to get directly inside the wood. Besides that, the user needs to wipe down the sanding dust before proceeding forward.
  3. Apply Insecticide: The next step will be to spray insecticide over the entire furniture. It has been recommended to apply two coats of insecticide making sure the first coat is dry before spraying the second coat.
  4. Note: The method is used to kill adult wood-boring beetles over the top surface rather than the larval ones.

Freezing Method

Wood-boring beetles can also be killed with the freezing method for which the user needs to perform the below-given steps;
  1. Get A Walk In Freezer: First, the user needs to get a big walk-in freezer that should be bigger in size than the infested furniture.
  2. Insert Furniture: After that, the user needs to insert furniture into the freezer and leave it inside for seven days. It has been recommended to wrap the furniture in plastic before putting it inside the freezer.
  3. Take Furniture Out: The last step will be to take the furniture out and let it be wrapped until the furniture settles back to the room temperature. The step will prevent the furniture from getting water-marks.

Heating Method

The wood-boring beetles can also be treated with a heating method. It has been recommended to heat the infested furniture with 140 to 150 degrees F for two hours. The method will kill all the wood-boring beetles in the furniture.
