How To Get Rid Of Black Burn Marks On Wood: 2 Simple Ways

2 Simple Ways To Remove Burn Marks On Wood

The wood items look great in our homes, offices, garages and also in hotels and restaurants but the wooden items can easily be damaged or burned and to fix these issues you need enough time, patience and a little bit of experience. Here are the 2 simple ways to fix all these problems without wasting your time:

1st Way: Repairing Surface Burns

  1. Table: First you need to buy steel wool (0000 the finest) to remove the burn marks from your wood. This steel wool method works best with the small, shallow burns such as from cigarette ash. Unlike the sandpaper, the lower numbers of steel wool are finer, but "fine" steel wool are marked with different numbers of zeroes. Here is an example, 000 steel wool is "extra fine," and 00 is "fine."
  2. Mineral Oil: Now, dampen the piece of your fine steel wool with mineral oil. Before setting your steel wool against the wood, pour an amount about 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) of mineral oil over your wool steel. This will lubricate the tendrils of your steel wool and avoid them from scratching your wood.
  3. Scrub: Scrub the dampened steel wool back & forth across the burn marks on your wood. Hold the steel wool in one hand, and rub it in a single direction on top of the burn mark in your hardwood surface. Rub along according to the grain of the wood, not across it (or you will damage your wood surface). After 10-12 passes, then you will notice that the burn mark of your wood has lightened considerably.
  4. Damp Clean Cloth: Blot the oily area dry with the help of a damp clean cloth. Once your burn mark has been erased then take a clean scrap of cotton cloth and now you need to run a little tap water over it. Don't rub back & forth across your wood, but lightly press your cloth down onto the oily surface to soak up the oil which is left behind by the steel wool.

2nd Way: Removing Burns On Dark Wood

  1. Mix Together: First you need to mix a thick paste of water & baking soda. If you are working burn mark on a dark wood surface, the burn color is white. To remove the burn mark from your dark wood, combine about 1 tablespoon (0.3 g) of baking soda and 1/8 teaspoon (0.62 mL) of clean water in a small water bowl. Use your one finger (or a spoon) to mix all the 2 ingredients together until they form a thick paste. Keep the consistency of the paste dry. If you add too much water to the mixture, you'll end up giving the wood surface a water stain.
  2. Buff The Paste: Buff your created paste into the burn of your dark wood by using a clean cloth. Scoop up a small dab of your thick baking soda paste with the corner of a scrap of clean cloth (cotton). Rub your thick paste into the light-colored wood burn to deliberately darken the color of the burn & eventually remove the burn mark altogether. If a single dab of thick water & baking soda paste isn't enough to remove the burn mark, apply two or even three more dabs of the paste.
  3. Apply A Furniture Polish: You can also apply furniture polish to the restored surface of your dark wood. Spray a commercial wood polish onto the 2nd scrap of clean cloth. Then, rub the furniture polish into the surface of your wark wood because it will remove the gritty baking-soda paste & also help the restored patch match the rest of your dark wood. Wipe along the grain of the dark wood, and then apply the furniture polish in smooth strokes, each about 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) long.
