Steps

Here are the steps which are required to French polish your old furniture:
  1. Smooth Surface: In order to apply French polish you need to make your surface smooth because dust, dirt, and grime will damage your polish.
  2. Mix: Take 1 pint of denatured alcohol with 3 ounces of shellac flakes and mix them well. Keep this mixture in tightly sealed container.
  3. Soak: Now, soak gauze in this mixture and put it in a cotton cloth, tie up the ends of your cloth and squeeze it to remove most of the mixture.
  4. Add: You can also add few drops of olive oil on the pad, this will help the pad to be wet.
  5. Apply: Now, apply the shellac mixture to the wood surface of your old furniture in a sweeping or gliding, working on one small area at one time, perhaps 2 square feet. You can also add a few drops of alcohol on your pad.
  6. Allow: Allow your last process to sit for a few hours because this oil will come to the surface of your old furniture.
  7. Dry: Once dry, now repeat the boding, stiffing and spiriting sessions.
  8. Polish: Now, polish the surface of your old wood furniture with rotten-stone and olive oil. Simply place the rotten stone in a salt shaker and then sprinkle it on the surface, then apply a few drops of olive oil to a fresh and new pad and rub the whole surface until you're satisfied fully.
  9. Finish: Now, finish your work with a thin coat of furniture wax because it will help to protect your French polish from damage.
