How To Frame A Rug For Hanging: Step By Step Process Of Framing A Rug Or Tapestry

Step By Step Process Of Framing A Rug Or Tapestry For Hanging

A textile, including a rug or a tapestry, can be placed or fixed on the wall in a frame, which in turn protects it from environmental damage or can be used for display purposes. When it comes to framing a rug or tapestry, it takes extra effort, works diligently as well as care in comparison to framing a photograph or poster. In spite of the fact that the process of hanging a tapestry is actually the same as hanging a picture or poster, however, additional steps must be taken in order to make sure that it is held securely in place while hanging on the wall. Textiles are usually heavier as compared to paper and therefore it needs a sturdier frame. To frame a rug or a tapestry, collect the required items first before going through the below-mentioned step by step process carefully:

Things You Will Need

  • Yard Stick Or Measuring Tape
  • Frame
  • Casings Or Velcro
  • Fabric Glue Or Stapler

Step By Step Process

  1. Measurement: First of all, put down the rug or tapestry flat on the floor and free its edges from a tangled or twisted state. Calculate or compute its sides carefully with the help of a yardstick or measuring tape and write down the measurements. Exact measurements are extremely important when it comes to obtaining the frame.
  2. Select A Frame: Now, you need to select a frame of your choice for the rug or tapestry, but make sure to get a frame that matches the colors of the rug or tapestry. Choose a heavier frame, for instance, a gilded, neoclassical frame. Thin, light plastic frames can be an ideal option when it comes to framing pictures or items, that are extremely lightweight.
  3. Use Casings Or Velcro: Next, use casings or Velcro on the back of the tapestry or rug in order to secure it in place even tighter when it is framed. When you use casings, hand stitch casings that are composed of heavy cotton, linen, or cotton twill rug through the top of the back of the rug or tapestry. After that, place, fit or push a metal rod that is shorter as compared to the width of the rug or tapestry into the casing. The casing should be invisible on the front of the rug or tapestry, however, it should be exquisitely straight as well as bulge from the backside. If it is stitched haphazardly or roughly, the rug or tapestry will hang irregularly. When it comes to using Velcro, hand stitch a strip of it to the top back of the rug or tapestry with the soft fuzzy side on the textile. You can also use fabric glue for additional hold. The complementing, stiff Velcro part should be stapled to the interior of the frame. The Velcro should be joined or fastened straight and match perfectly. You can use two strips if in case one is not enough.
  4. Assemble The Frame: Put down the rug or tapestry onto the interior back of the frame. Free its edges from a tangled or twisted state so that the textile lays evenly as well as straight. Entirely dependent on the frame you got, you may need to assemble it by securing the glass front and the sides of the frame to its back. Close the frame if required. The rug or tapestry will now be attached to the frame and can be placed or fixed on a wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • As an alternative or substitute for casings or Velcro, you can also use matting, which is a boundary or perimeter for your textile. Matting makes it extremely easy to insert the tapestry into the frame. The matting is generally placed on all of the edges on the rear side of the rug or tapestry.
  • Make sure not to use adhesives when it comes to placing or fixing textiles if you planning to undo it later on if desired.
  • Select metal rods which are painted, varnished or shellacked in order to prevent rusting, which can stain your rug or textile with the passage of time.
