How To Fix Uneven Chair Legs: Steps To Fix Uneven Chair Legs

Steps To Fix Uneven Chair Legs

Mostly wooden chairs wobble after they are used for a longer time. The reason behind the wobbly nature of the chair could be its uneven legs that can be fixed within minutes by following the below-given steps:
  1. Stand The Chair On A Countertop:
The first step will be to stand the chair on a table or a countertop so that the user sees the meeting point of chair legs & the surface clearly.
  2. Rock The Chair:
The next step will be to rock the chair side by side in order to determine the rocking movement of the chair. The user needs to lean down at eye level and see which of the legs has daylight underneath. Also, he needs to see the gap between the surface & the leg and note its largeness approximately.
  3. Rock The Chair Harder:
After that, the user needs to rock the chair harder by which he will see that one leg doesn't move while one leg bounces slowly and the other two have gaps in between. The leg that doesn't move needs to be taped because it has to be trimmed. In case two legs don't move, the user has a choice to trim any one of them.
  4. Place The Chair On Its Side:
In the next step, the user needs to place the chair on its side in a way so that the taped leg is right at the top. There is a possibility that the leg will have a shiny metal circle known as thumbtack at the bottom which needs to be removed using a hammer and a chisel.
  5. Wrap Masking Tape:
After that, the user needs to wrap a masking tape around the leg from where the thumbtack was removed. The tape should be wrapped evenly similar to the measurement noted as a gap between the leg & the surface.
  6. Cut The Leg Off:
The next step will be to cut the chair leg at the tape mark using a coping saw. It has been recommended to use short strokes in order to trim the leg evenly. Once completed, the user needs to sand the end side of the leg using hand block with 100-grit sandpaper. After that, the user needs to tap the thumbtack back to the chair leg.
  7. Stand & Rock The Chair Again:
The next step will be to stand the chair up again and rock it hard. In case, the chair still rocks, the user needs to remove the thumbtack again from the leg and trim it 1/16 inch at a time. After that, the user needs to retest the chair and repeat the process until it stops rocking and sits on the level.
  8. Sand The Leg:
The last step will be to sand the leg at the end using a hand block. The user can also color the end using color matched stain marker.
