Easy Process Of Repairing Large, Small & Multiple Tears In A Carpet

Using carpet for so many years may result in a wear and tear in your carpet, which in turn may make it highly possible to repair it at that point in time. Tears present in your carpet may be large, small or it can have multiple tears. Even if your carpet is affected by only small tears, it can become irritating and unattractive, however, there is a way of repairing your torn carpet, instead of replacing it. Large as well as multiple tears can also be repaired including the tears caused by pet dog & will make your carpet look brand new again.

Repairing Small Tears

  • Pick Up The Torn Edge: First of all, you need to place a thin, flat edged utensil, for instance, ruler below the carpet & pick up the torn edge.
  • Apply Latex Seam Adhesive: Now, bend the carpet back as far as the tear allows you to do so and apply a line of latex seam adhesive across the tear's base edge. Straighten back the carpet down & put it in place. On the other hand, you can also trim a heat-activated tape at least 1 to 2 inches longer than the tear. Position it under the tear and make sure to iron over the tape with the help of a steam iron, driving the carpet into the heated tape.
  • Replace Missing Fibers: Finally, you need to put any missing fibers back in a previous place or position across the tear. After that, trim a few fibers back & forth from hidden portions of the carpet, for instance, underneath a large piece of furniture or through the baseboards. Fix each fiber separately across the tear with the help of superglue.

Repairing Large Tears

  • Expose The Area Under The Tear: Firstly, with the help of a chisel, heave and uplift a corner of the carpet from the tack strips that are very close to the damaged portion. Bend the carpet as much as you can in order to expose the area under the tear.
  • Seam 1-inch Stitches: Attach & seam 1-inch stitches in order to secure the tear every ¼ inch on the carpet back, with the help of a carpet thread, the color of which should exactly match the carpet. Check the top of the carpet in order to make sure that the stitches are not visible.
  • Apply Latex Adhesive: Lastly, you need to apply latex adhesive line all across the stitches at the carpet back. Create a form or edge that smoothly curves in and out & encloses both sides of the stitches. Straighten the carpet back into place and with the help of a knee-kicker, reattach it to the tack strips.

Fixing Multiple Tears

  • Draw A Square: First of all, make a square on every side of the damaged area, with the help of a chalk and a straight edge. Take the measurement of the width as well as the depth of the square and trim a piece of spare carpet to size, as per your measurements.
  • Trim Across The Chalk Line: Trim all across the chalk line with the help of a utility knife and then get rid of the damaged area. Make sure not to trim through to the underlay.
  • Double-sided Tape: Fasten double-sided tape to the underlay on every edge of the removed area. Position the spare carpet square into place and squeeze it onto the tape. With the help of a fine-tooth comb, put together the edges of the existing carpet and the new repaired area.
