How To Fix Motion Sensor Light Switch: Proper Procedure To Install A Motion-Sensor Light Switch

Proper Procedure To Install A Motion-Sensor Light Switch

Motion sensor lights are considered one of the great options when it comes to lighting specific parts of your home, including exterior walkways, driveways as well as garage areas. They also play an important role as outdoor security lights, which in turn help protect your property against intruders or trespassers. The motion sensor light turns on as well as off based on motion. This means that it would turn on as soon as someone in its sensor range comes near it. For instance, if you install a motion sensor light somewhere on your porch, it will instinctively light up when you walk near it. At the same time, it would also instinctively turn off after a few minutes of not sensing motion. This useful feature is controlled by the in-built motion sensor that you can generally control with a switch button. If you switch on the motion sensor, then it will work as soon as it detects motion. If you switch it off, then it will work same as a regular light. In order to install a motion-sensor light switch, first of all, you need to collect the certain tools & materials required for the process before going through the below-mentioned steps carefully & achieve the desired result of your work:

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Circuit Tester & Wire Strippers
  • Slotted Screwdriver & Cordless Drill
  • Phillips-Head Screwdriver
  • Screwdriver Attachment
  • Wire Connectors & Sensor Switch

Steps

  1. Turn Off The Power: First of all, recognize or distinguish the circuit to the light switch you will be replacing, before turning the power off at the circuit breaker. As a precautionary measure, place a "Do Not Touch" sign on the external side or surface of the circuit box so that someone else doesn't ignorantly restore power to the circuit while you are working.
  2. Test The Wires, And Remove The Switch: Pull out the wall-plate from the existing switch, before testing the wires with the help of a circuit tester, like the audible-alarm tester, to be fully sure there is no power flowing to the wires you will be removing. With the audible tester, a consistent beep would point out or signify that there is still power. The tester make sure or demonstrate that the power was off. With the power switched off, get rid of the screws that take hold of the old switch in place.
  3. Cut The Wires: The old switch has 3 wires connected at the back, namely, a black wire, a white wire and a bare ground. The black as well as white wires will be connected to the new motion-sensor switch, where as, the ground will not be used. Now, trim the wires at the back of the old switch.
  4. Strip The Black And White Wires: After removing the old switch, strip the plastic insulation off the ends of the black as well as white wires with the help of wire strippers.
  5. Connect The Wires To The New Switch: After you have stripped the ends of the wires, they can be attached or fastened to the new switch using hooks. Protect the end of the black wire on every side of one of the wire connections on the back of the switch. Repeat the process with the white wire before securing the wires with wire-connectors.
  6. Tuck Wires Into The Box, And Secure The Switch: Push, fold, or turn the excess wire into the back of the switch box so as to hide or secure them. Place the connected motion-sensor switch into the switch box before securing the switch with the help of the mounting screws provided.
  7. Customize The Controls, And Reinstall The Wall-Plate: Take note of the customizing controls for adjusting the sensitivity as well as the timing of the light activation. On our switch, the bottom adjustment controlled as soon as the lights come on after someone enters the room. The bottom ascertains or establishes how long the lights stay on after everyone has left the room. Set these controls as per your liking before installing the wall-plate. After installing & adjusting the switch, reinstall the switch wall-plate.
