Easy Process To Repair Chair Spindles, Backs & Legs

Wooden chairs are completely dependent on many parts, including spindles, backs & legs, which may suffer from cracks, split or loosen from time to time. Spindles And Backs

  • Hold The Spindle: Take hold of each spindle or back rail with the help of your hand. Move up and down or from side to side and twist them separately. Recognize or distinguish spindles or rails that are loose or cracked.
  • Putty Knife: Put in the head of a putty knife into any cracks or splits. Raise, move, or pull apart the split open with a lever as far as you possibly can. Apply wood glue into the crack in order to saturate it & the take off the knife. Position the clamps on the crack to squeeze it. If in case the clamps won't work, muffle the spindle tight with the help of masking tape. Cleanse any wet glue using a damp cloth.   • 1/4-Inch Drill Bit: Now, put in a 1/4-inch drill bit into a drill/driver. Position the head of the bit where loose spindles or back rails go into or through the chair seats. Turn over the bit 30 degrees. Drill up or down between the end of the spindle or rail to near about 1 1/2 inches in depth. If the bit makes a hole all the way through to the other side, it is fine.
  • Apply Glue: Put & spread glue into the hole. Strike one 1/4-by-1 1/2-inch dowel into the hole with the help of a hammer. If it goes all the way through that's ok. Allow the glue to dry for the whole night. Cut any projection ends of the dowel with the help of a hammer and chisel. Color the end of the dowel in order to match the chair with the help of a stain marker.

Legs

  • Turn The Chair: Firstly, tilt the chair bottom up. Take hold of the legs with the help of your hands. Move up and down or from side to side and twist them in order to recognize loose mortises, dowels, cracks or splits.
  • Pull The Legs Apart: Pull the legs away from each other if possible. If in case the motion uncovers dowels or tenons, put or spread glue to the uncovered part of the tenon or dowel. Position the clamps on the parts in order to squeeze the dowel or mortise back into the equivalent mortise or hole. Cleanse the wet glue with the help of a damp cloth. Let the glue to dry for whole night & then take off the clamps. Sweep off the dried glue with the help of a putty knife.
  • Apply Glue Into The Crack: Lift apart cracks or splits as far as you possibly can with the help of a putty knife. Put or spread glue into the crack as long as it becomes saturated before removing the knife. Put in the clamps on the leg and secure in order to squeeze the crack.
  • 3/8-inch Drill Bit: Put in a 3/8-inch drill bit into a drill/driver. Drill through the crack, and completely through the leg. If in case the crack or split is more then 3 inches long, drill two holes, equally spaced.
  • Insert Dowels: Strike 3/8-by-3-inch dowels into the holes with the help of a hammer. Allow the dowel to come through from both sides of the leg. Cleanse the wet glue with the help of a damp cloth. Allow the glue to dry for the whole night.
  • Sand The Dowels: Trim the projecting ends of the dowels off flush with the help of a coping saw. Sand the ends of the dowels gently with the help of a 120-grit sandpaper. Color the end of the dowel in order to match the chair with the help of a stain marker.
