How To Fix Loose Metal Railing Spindles: Two Easy Ways To Tighten Loose Metal Railing Spindles

Two Easy Ways To Tighten Loose Metal Railing Spindles

The spindles, also known as the balusters, usually support the handrail that will help prevent anyone from falling out of the staircase. In order to repair or tighten a loose spindle, you simply need to fasten or secure it to the handrail. However, if you defer the repairing process and the spindle splits or breaks after being hit or put down around for several months, then you will have to replace it. Replacing a spindle can be a very difficult & complicated task that will require you to purchase a new spindle. Therefore, fix the loose spindle problem yourself as quickly as possible and try to save time and money, & the two easy ways to perform the repairing process are mentioned below. Go through both the given ways carefully & tighten your loose metal railing spindles.

Way 1: Shim The Loose Spindle

  • First of all, dry-fit a wooden shim in order to make sure that it installs or fixes comfortably into the gap betwixt the uppermost part of your loose spindle and the handrail.
  • The next step is to apply wood glue gently, delicately, or softly over the shim.
  • After that, place, fit, or push the shim into the gap at the uppermost part of your loose spindle and smoothly tap it with the help of a hammer in order to set it firmly into place. Get rid of any glue, by wiping, that flow or leak slowly out of the gap.
  • Finally, you need to dry the wood glue before trimming away the exposed portion of the shim. Leave it abundantly with the surface of the handrail.

Way 2: Nail The Loose Spindle To The Handrail

  • Firstly, find a drill bit that is, to a small degree, smaller as compared to the shank of your finishing nails.
  • The next step is to drill a pilot hole at an angle along the uppermost part of your spindle into the handrail of your staircase.
  • Then, hammer the finishing nail across the pilot hole in the uppermost part of your handrail to affix or secure it gently to the handrail.
  • After that, grasp a nail set in opposition to the top of the finishing nail and strike it with the hammer. This will help drive the finishing nail underneath the surface of the spindle.
  • Finally, apply the wood putty to the nail hole, with the help of a putty knife in order to make it flush with the surface of the spindle to put or keep the nail out of sight.
