How To Fix Frayed Couch Cushions: 2 Methods Of Fixing Frayed Fabric & Leather Couch Cushions

Two Easy Methods Of Fixing Frayed Fabric & Leather Couch Cushions

Irrespective of the type of upholstery the couch is made from, rips or frays in your couch cushions need to be rectified as quickly as possible. Rips that are not repaired quickly may worsen further, & if you don't pay attention to this issue, then it can totally ruin your whole couch cushion. If you are going to fix a ripper or frayed couch cushion yourself, then you just need to collect all the required items and go through both the methods mentioned below:

Things Needed

  • Anti-Fray Glue & Sewing Pins
  • 6-Inch Upholstery Needle
  • Heavy-Duty Polyester Upholstery Thread
  • Scalpel
  • Leather Adhesive Or Strong Fabric Glue & Toothpick
  • Leather Filler & Leather Color
  • Sponge & Leather Sealant

Method 1: Fixing Fabric Upholstery

  1. Open The Zipper & Remove Padding
First of all, you need to open the zipper and then remove the padding before turning your cover inside out.
Now, you need to apply anti-fray glue on any worn edges.
  2. Hold Your Rip Together
The next thing is to set the iron at least temperature. Now you need to hold your rip together and then line up the edges of your entire length. Next, glide your iron across the fold a few times using light pressure.
  3. Pin Your Rip Together Using A Few Sewing Pins
You need to pin your rip together with the help of a few sewing pins. Now place them 3-fourths of an inch from the edge of your rip, parallel to it.
  4. Select A Color Of Heavy-duty Polyester Upholstery Thread
You need to choose a color of heavy-duty polyester upholstery thread that is identical to your cushion. Hold your thread against your couch in order to compare the shades.
  5. Thread A 6-inch Upholstery Needle
Now you need to thread a 6-inch upholstery needle with the help of thread. After that, at the thread end, tie a knot.
  6. Pull Your Thread Through
Next, you need to insert your needle through with the bottom of the top layer of fabric, approximately 1-eighth of an inch from the edge, starting at the bottom of your rip. Simply pull your thread through with until the knot meets the bottom of the top layer of your fabric.
  7. Whip The Stitch By Pushing The Needle
Now, whip the stitch by pushing the needle from the back to the front of both layers over & over again to create slanted stitches, which loop around the edges of your tear. Continue to whip stitching until you reach the end of your rip.
  8. Turn Your Cover Right Side Out
Finally, start turning your cover right side out. Put your stuffing inside the cover and then zipper it shut.

Method 2: Fixing Leather Upholstery

  1. Cut Away Worn, Unbalanced Edges Of Your Tear
Firstly, cut away worn, unbalanced edges of your tear with a razor knife, scalpel, or sharp scissors.
  2. Measure The Perimeter Of Your Rip
Now, you need to measure the perimeter of your rip. You need to choose medium-weight firm cotton fabric from a featherweight canvas or cloth provided by the leather repair kit. You need to trim your cloth so it is 1 inch bigger than the perimeter of the couch tear.
  3. Insert Your Cloth Behind The Tear
Then, insert your cloth behind the tear by using a pair of tweezers. Now you need to place your cloth in a way that you should be able to see that it is centered underneath the couch tear. The next thing is to smooth all wrinkles in your cloth until it lays flat.
  4. Apply Leather Adhesive Or Any Strong Fabric Glue
Now, you need to apply leather adhesive or any strong fabric glue into the torn area betwixt your cushion & the cloth with a toothpick.
  5. Put A Heavyweight On The Patch
Next, start putting a heavyweight on the patch & make sure to apply adhesive & set for at least 1 complete hour.
  6. Apply A Thin Layer Of The Leather Filler Over The Tear
Now, you need to apply a thin layer of the leather filler over the tear & let it sit until it dries wholly. Continue to layer your leather filler until the torn area is barely visible. Let it set betwixt each application.
  7. Dip The Edge Of Your Sponge Into The Leather Color
The next thing is to dip the edge of your sponge into the leather color that easily matches the color of your cushion. Sponge the torn area about one-quarter of an inch around the perimeter. Now you need to blend your color lightly & let it sit until it's dry.
  8. Apply A Layer Of Leather Sealant
Finally, you need to apply a layer of leather sealant and leave it to dry entirely.
