How To Fix Cabinet Door Panel: Steps & Items Needed To Repair A Cabinet Door Panel

Steps & Items Needed To Fix/Repair A Cabinet Door Panel

Cabinet doors are frequently made in 1 of 2 styles, a solid or flat door, or a panel-style door. With the panel-style wood cabinet door, the panel is generally a loose insert that is built into your cabinet door frame during its manufacturing process. If you are going to fix your cabinet door panel then you need to collect all the required items and then follow all the given steps carefully. Here is the list of required items and steps for this process:

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver & Carpenter's Glue
  • 2 Pieces Of Scrap Wood & Wood Clamps
  • Utility Knife & Epoxy Filler For Furniture Repair
  • Wax Paper & Putty Knife
  • Wood Filler & Sanding Block
  • Wood Stain & Acrylic Paints
  • Sealer & Router
  • Glass & Silicone Caulk
  • Glaziers Points

Steps For This Process

  • Step 1: First of all, you need to remove your cabinet door from the cabinet. Wash your door by using soap and water in order to remove as much dirt & grease as possible. Dry your door with the help of a towel.
  • Step 2: The next thing to do is to examine the damage. If a hole was made through with the panel then it is likely that the wood is torn or missing. If you can glue your wood back together that may be worth a try. You need to use carpenter's glue betwixt the wood pieces. Now you need to place scrap wood on the top & bottom over your broken area and clamp your scraps together to place pressure on your wood pieces while the applied glue dries. After your wood dries then you need to use wood filler to fill in any holes in your cabinet door.
  • Step 3: Now you need to remove extensive damage that cannot be abbreviate. Clean up both sides of the panel with the help of a utility knife or you can also use small saw until you are left with your good wood. You now need to mix an epoxy filler which is used for any furniture repair. This will knead into dough-like flexibility. Press your filler into the gap from the backside of the door and then you need to smooth it out by using a putty knife. Next, place a scrap piece of your wood with the help of a wax paper over it under the repair and then simply turn your door face up. This will keep your filler from pressing back through. Also, smooth out your surface filler. Leave it marginally humped to allow for the shrinkage. Let the applied filler dry as suggested by product guidance. After the applied filler dries then you need to use a regular wood filler in order to fill in any low areas.
  • Step 4: Next you need to sand the dried repairs on both sides of your door. You need to use a sanding block & sand in the direction of your wood grain. Sand your repair area until it is smooth & flush with the rest of your panel. Wipe with your tack cloth.
  • Step 5: Finally, you need to stain small repair areas to match the existing stain. Paint larger areas by using acrylic paints. Thin down your acrylics with water & blend colors to specifically match your wood tone. Fade in a base color to match the background wood & then casually you need to use a tiny brush or feather to replicate a few matching grains so that your wood filler looks like your original wood. Allow the acrylics to dry comprehensively and then you need to use a sealer over your entire panel. This will make your repair nearly invisible.
  • Step 6: Finally, router out the back inside frame edge if your door panel is too damaged to save. You need to cut a piece of glass to fit. Simply run a bead of silicone along the inside front edge of your frame and press your glass into the silicone in order to hold it. You can insert glaziers points for further security. This will turn your panel into a glass door.

Tip

If you need to replace your panel with glass then consider doing a companion door if your cabinet uses the two doors. This will make your repair look like a premeditated upgrade. The repaired panels can also be painted instead than stained if you want to paint all of your cabinets to hide your repair.
