How To Fix A Broken Couch Bottom: Step By Step Process Of Fixing A Broken Couch Bottom

Step By Step Process Of Fixing A Broken Couch Bottom

When you use an ordinary sofa for a long time, it is highly possible that you place a lot of stress on the sofa, which majority of the people don't realize. It is worse directly in the center where the conglomerated weight of several people can sag the springs or break the parallel beam at the bottom in front. This is usually the most common place for a sofa to break. When you place the sofas in recreation rooms, dorms, or anywhere roughhousing occurs, then it is highly possible that all the time you place sofas in these areas, they will sag or break the sofa. If two or even more people sit on the front of the sofa simultaneously, then the front beam or the springs can give out. You can easily overlay the beam as well as the springs in order to reinforce or fix the broken couch at the bottom.

Step 1: Remove The Cushions & Turn The Sofa Upside Down

First of all, you need to take out all the cushions from the sofa before turning the sofa upside down. Compute the length as well as the width of the parallel beam at the front of the sofa. If the bottom of your sofa is covered & protected with a light, screen-like fabric, then you need to remove the staples with the help of a staple puller. Pull back the fabric in order to expose the beams.

Step 2: Cut A Poplar Plank The Same Size As The Beam

Now, you need to cut a poplar plank exactly the same size as the beam, with the help of a table saw. Fit through the plank to the back side of the beam. If it won't fit, then make sure to cut 1 inch off the end as long as the plank will fit flush against the back of the beam. On the other hand, if there is another beam joining onto the beam in the center at 90 degrees, then cut the plank into two pieces, one for each side.

Step 3: Apply Glue Liberally To The Poplar Plank

Next, you need to spread glue liberally to the poplar plank. Attach or secure it to the back of the beam flush with the bottom edge, with the help of a drill/driver and a 1 1/2-inch screw. Position the screws four inches apart, one inch from the top as well as bottom edges, with a row of screws down the center. There is no need to pre-drill. Allow the glue to fully dry overnight.

Step 4: Staple The Fabric Back Onto The Bottom

Staple the fabric back onto the bottom, with the help of an upholstery stapler having staples that have a 3/16-inch leg, as well as a 1/2-inch crown. Turn or flip the couch onto its feet. You will notice an area covered by a mesh material with springs underneath it. Calculate or compute the area covered by the material.

Step 5: Sand And Round All The Edges As Well As Corners

Finally, trim a piece of 1/8-inch luan plywood to the measurement, with the help of a table saw. Sand as well as round all the edges and corners by hand, using 100-grit sandpaper. Position the plywood on the mesh material in order to spread out the weight more evenly on the springs. Put down the cushions back onto the couch, on top of the luan plywood.
