How To Fit Carpet Door Gripper: 5 Easy Steps To Fit & Install A Carpet Edge Strip For A Door

5 Easy Steps To Fit & Install A Carpet Edge Strip For A Door

When it comes to giving the finishing touches to a properly installed carpet, you need to install an edge strip. A carpet edge strip, commonly known as a carpet transition piece, will usually be used in a doorway. However, you can also use a carpet transition piece anywhere that a carpet ends and a different type of flooring material begins. There is a huge range of different brands as well as styles of carpet edge strips available & you can choose the style and color that will fit with your carpet and room décor.

Items Needed

  • Carpet Edge Strip
  • Pencil Or Other Marking Device
  • Masonry Bit Or Regular Bit, 1/8 Inch
  • Tape Measure
  • Hacksaw (For Metal Edge Strip) Or Regular Saw (For Wooden Edge Strip)
  • Screwdriver Adapter For The Drill
  • Screws 1.5 Inches Long
  • Carpet Or Utility Knife
  • Carpet Seam Sealer

Step 1: Measure Door Opening

There are two easy ways of measuring the door opening. One is to put down the edge strip in opposition to the door frame at floor level with one end butted in opposition to the corresponding side of the door frame and mark the other side with the help of a pencil or other marking device where the other side of the door frame joins the edge strip. Another way is to calculate & compute the width of the door at floor level before transferring this measurement to your edge strip.

Step 2: Cut

With the help of a correct type of saw, rigorously start the cut on your edge strip from the bottom and authenticate the proper measurement. Trimming on the bottom makes sure that if your measurement is off at all, you won’t be showing any blemished or stained surfaces when you correct the measurement.

Step 3: Drill Pilot Holes

Now, position your edge strip in the doorway where you are looking to fit it and it should be square with the door opening. Take hold of it securely with one hand, mark nearly four of the screw openings with your marking device. Eliminate the edge strip and with the help of a drill having the proper bit, drill pilot holes for the screws being used. For a concrete slab floor, you need to use a ¼ inch masonry bit and screw inserts in order to fix the edge strip in place.

Step 4: Secure Edge Strip In Place

Next, lay down the edge strip back on the floor and align the screw holes with your pilot holes. Using the drill having the screwdriver tip, install the four screws needed to affix the edge strip to the floor.

Step 5: Trim And Insert Carpet

Finally, you need to stretch the carpet in the doorway to full length. Bend the carpet back upon itself so that it extends ¼ inch into the edge strip. Bend the excess under itself and coat it with the help of a carpet seam sealer. Place, fit, or push this bent portion into the slot on the edge strip and smooth the carpet towards the doorway to securely seat the carpet in the edge strip.
