2 Methods To Fill Screw Holes In Wood Furniture

Wooden furniture look great in our homes and offices but with attached nails or screws can also ruin the look of it, if you want to fill the screw holes in wooden furniture then you need to follow the 2 below given methods:

Method 1: For Painted Wood Surface

Here are the 3 easy steps for this method:
  • The first step is to countersink all screws into the surface of your wood furniture with the help of a screwdriver. Don't sink the screws too deep into the wooden furniture surface.
  • Once done, now apply wood filler(small amount) on a drywall spatula before covering the hole with this wood filler. Hold the blade of your drywall spatula at a 45 degree angle to the wooden furniture surface & scrape firmly and slowly across.
  • After applying the wood filler then you have for wait for at-least 24 hours completely, once dried wholly, now sand the surface of your wooden furniture with the help of a sanding block and then the applied wood filler is level with wooden surface.

Method 2: For Unpainted Surface

Here are the 7 easy steps for this method:
  • In order to fill the screw holes on the unpainted surface you need to remove the screw from the hole by using a screwdriver. Drill a larger hole but make sure to drill between 1/4-inch & 1/2-inch into the surface of the wood with a drill.
  • The previous steps will create a countersink hole. Now, reinsert the screw. If indispensable, use a shorter screw then. If you already have countersunk the screw holes then you can skip this step.
  • Now you need to cut the wooden dowels or plugs out of the same type of wood according to your old wooden type and also according to the required size. Pre-cut wooden plugs with domed top are also easily available on market. These pre-cut wooden plugs are especially designed to sit above the wooden furniture surface.
  • Place a drop of your wood glue into the hole on the wooden furniture because the screw rests in & place the end of pre-cut wooden plug in the hole. Tap the wooden plug into the hole by using a rubber mallet.
  • If you are using domed plugs & you contemplate to let them bulge from the surface of your wooden furniture, wipe any extra glue off the wooden furniture surface with a moist rag & stop and then your installation is completed successfully. If you want a flush finish on the surface of your wooden furniture, wipe the excess wood glue, wait 24 hours for the glue to dry wholly.
  • After following all the previous steps now you need to place a flat saw against the wooden furniture surface & cut the wood plug flush with the wood surface. A flat saw is malleable & will rise along with wood's surface without damaging your wood.
  • Sand the wooden surface with the help of a sanding block to blend the pre-cut wooden plug in with the wood's surface.
