Distress refers to giving the furniture an aged or antique look. If the user is looking for furniture with a bit of history, he doesn't need to look around the market in fact, he can give his new furniture an antique look by following the below-given steps of instruction.

Materials & Tools Required:

The Tools and Material required for giving the furniture an antique look are Sandpaper, Paint, Brushes or Rollers, Polyurethane, Steel Wool, Candle, Drop Cloths, Rags or Tack Cloths, and Stain (optional).
  1. Preparing The Space:
    The first step will be to prepare a surface by placing drop cloths underneath the furniture. It is also necessary to remove metal knobs & hardware from the furniture and place them away from the area.
  2. Sand & Cleaning:
    The next step will be to sand the whole surface of the furniture. It is recommended to use light sanding on unfinished furniture and a more thorough sanding on painted or polyurethane treated furniture. The user can also soften the sharp edges of the furniture. After sanding, wipe out the dust & dirt from the furniture using a tack cloth or a rag.
  3. Painting:

How To Distress Furniture With Vinegar?

The simple steps to distress furniture using vinegar are mentioned below:
  1. Cleaning:
    The first step is to dust off the dirt from the piece of furniture using a damp & clean rag.
  2. Painting:
    The next step will be to paint down the whole furniture according to the user preference. The user can apply two or three coats which depend upon the quality of paint & the darkness of furniture but make sure each coat is dried up before applying the next coat and let the last coat dry up before proceeding.
  3. Spray Vinegar:
    In the next step, the user needs to prepare a spray bottle containing vinegar & water. The vinegar can either be distilled white vinegar or apple cider. After which the user needs to spray the mixture on to the painted wood.
  4. Rub The Paint:
    The last step will be to rub the paint with a white and clean rag in order to remove some paint from the furniture which will create a worn look. It is also recommended to use steel wool in order to remove the paint from the furniture but that depends upon the user if he wants his furniture to be seriously distressed.


How To Distress Furniture With Black Paint?

The steps required to distress furniture with black paint are as follows:
  1. Gather Products:
    Before beginning the distressing process, it is necessary to get all the products required in the process collected in one place. The products required here are fine sanding sponge, tack cloth, black primer, and oil-based brushing lacquer.
  2. Sanding & Remove Dust:
    The next step will be to sand the whole furniture on which the work has to be done with a fine sanding sponge and once finished, remove its dust with a tack cloth.
  3. Apply Primer:
    The next step will be to apply a primer all over the furniture and wait till it dries up. If the primer doesn't cover the furniture, the user can apply a coat of black paint as well.
  4. Distress The Furniture:
    The next step will be to distress the furniture using a fine sanding sponge which the user can do so according to his preference. The areas to target are corners, edges, and high spots.
  5. Dusting:
    Once distressed, use a tack cloth in order to dust the whole furniture.
  6. Apply Lacquer:
