How To Distress A Black Chair: Steps & Items Needed For Distressing A Black Chair

Steps & Items Needed For Distressing A Black Chair

Distressing is a method to give your furniture including chairs a weathered look, which in turn, means the distressed furniture will look very old as well as aged. The main aim of the distressing technique is to manipulate the finish of the product like a chair intentionally in order to make it look less perfect. The two important items that you can use in order to manipulate the finish of the chair include sandpaper & paint stripper. If you are looking to give your black chair a weathered look by the distressing technique, you need to first collect certain items & then carefully go through all the steps mentioned below:

Items Needed

  • Fine-Grit Sandpaper, 220 Grit
  • Liquid Dish Detergent & Bucket
  • Dish Sponge With An Abrasive Side
  • Clean Rags, Tack Cloth & Screwdriver
  • Ice Pick, Burnt-Umber Acrylic Craft Paint
  • Small Container & Paste Wax

Steps

  1. First of all, you need to start the sanding process & therefore sand the shiny finish on the black chair gently with the help of fine-grit sandpaper. This will help to cleanse the grime as well as oil from the wood as it eliminates the gloss. With the help of a tack cloth, cleanse the chair. If in case there is no shiny finish, then make the surface clean. Affix 1 tablespoon of dish detergent to a vessel of warm water. Use the rubbing side of a dish sponge soaked into the solution. Cleanse your chair with a mop soaked into clean water. Make it dry with the help of a clean cloth.
  2. Next, distress the black finish by sanding areas that would reveal natural damage from years of use. The spots may include back edges & the seat, the tops of the arms, and high marks on spindles and legs.
  3. Now, you need to add cuts as well as small holes to the chair seat, back, and arms with the help of a screwdriver and ice pick. This will demonstrate additional damage and mimic wormholes.
  4. After that, force a little amount of acrylic paint into a shallow bucket. Moisten a clean piece of cloth with water and then soak a corner into your paint. Rub the paint over a small sanded area in order to blacken exposed natural wood. Quickly rub that area with the help of a dry, clean cloth in order to eliminate the paint. It will make your wood slightly uncomfortable with burnt umber. Persist with this process, staining one area at one time, until you have handled all of the exposed wood. Give your chair to dry completely & it takes at least one hour to dry wholly.
  5. Finally, soak the corner of a soft cloth into your paste wax. Wipe the wax onto the wood until the entire chair has been waxed. Buff the wood with the help of a soft, clean cloth. Make the chair dry and harden it by going through the instructions on the can. This will, in turn, design a soft, smooth patina on your black chair.
