How To Cut Upholstery Foam: 6 Easy Steps For Cutting Upholstery Foam

6 Easy Steps For Cutting The Upholstery Foam

The foam is dense than the user might think. The foam has a rubbery feel, but it can be easily compressed with the fingers. There are 3 basic types of upholstery foam. Color-coded with black is the densest, which is followed by light blue and then green. It ranges in thickness from about 1 inch to a full 3 inches. The furniture builders often go for band saw to cut out the upholstery foam because they need to cut out large quantities, but the user can cut the foam by hand with the help of ordinary utility knife, to do that follow the steps mentioned below:
  1. Worktable: Its important to place the foam on a flat worktable. If the user does not want to cut the surface that time place a piece of scrap wood underneath the foam before placing it on the worktable.
  2. Measurement: Make the measurement and mark out all the dimensions that the user wishes to cut on the face of the foam. In order to draw a straightedge cut-lines with a black marker use a 48-inch level as a straightedge.
  3. Purchase The Foam: The Foam is easily available at the craft stores, haberdashery, as well as at the upholstery shops. The user needs to select a type of foam that has the right thickness. Some foams are softer than others. It is advisable to purchase the foam that is not too dense in order to make the cutting job easier.
  4. Hold: After the measurement is done then hold down the level in place on the drawn line to use as a guide. After that use the tip of the utility knife, and start score along the line to a depth of about 1/4 inch, guide the utility knife with the help of edge of the straightedge.
  5. Cut And Score: On all of the lines that are drawn cut and score around the perimeter. At the same time remove the level. The user will notice that the foam parts on both sides of the cuts when the user applies pressure to one or each side. Push the foam on one side with the help of fingers and continue to follow the line using the knife, cut deeper with each of the strokes. Stop cutting once the user will get within 1/2 inch of penetrating through the foam.
  6. Push Hard: Try to push hard so that the tip of the knife will go all the way through the final 1/2 inch. It's advisable to pull the knife all along the well-established cut-line in just one stroke to part the foam completely. This final cut with a single stroke will help to prevent ragged edges on the foam. At last, cut out all the remaining lines with the single stroke to finish.
