How To Clean Yellowed Blinds: Proper Cleaning Procedure

Proper Cleaning Procedure Of The Yellowed Blinds

Sunlight can make the white blinds yellow with the span of time. Once they are dusted and cleaned, they may be able to whiten again. The proper step by step procedure for cleaning different types of the yellowed blinds are as follows:
  1. Plastic And Aluminum Blinds: For these types of blinds fill the bathtub using cold water with the 2 or 3 cups of liquid bleach. Remove the blinds from the window and then soak them in the bleach solution, leave in the solution for about 10 minutes. While working open the windows and run a fan to ensure that there is good air circulation in the work area.
  2. Wipe: Wear rubber gloves and then take a sponge to wipe off each of the slats with the bleach solution. After wiping is done then drain the tub and rinse the blinds with the freshwater and leave the blinds over the tub so that any excess water drip off.
  3. Air Dry: After the above step is done then hang the blinds outside for air dry or they can also be dried with an old towel. It is important to make sure not to get the bleach solution on the skin, clothes, or anything else. It is a good option to place some old towels right under the blinds after they are left to dry, in case they continue to drip excess water.
  4. Garden Hose Or Pressure Washer: If the user prefers, to take the blinds outside and then spray them with the help of a bleach solution. Rinse the blinds from both sides with the help of a garden hose or simply with a pressure washer after that hang them to air dry before taking them inside.
  5. Wooden Blinds: In order to brighten the yellow or discolored wooden blinds, dust them properly and leave them in place if there are only a few spots to work on. Use a best quality wood cleaner or a wood polish to remove the few spots. But if the blinds are very badly discolored, that time remove them down and preform the re-paint job outside.

Important Tip

Follow the cleaning directions that come with the blinds. Some of the manufacturers recommend not to submerge the blinds in water, which can lead to rusting. Placing them underwater may void the warranty. It is highly advised to not use water on wood blinds.
