Items Needed For This Process

  • Towels & Trisodium Phosphate
  • Water & All Purpose Cleaner
  • Mild Soap & Sponge
  • Scrub Brush

Method 1: Preparing The Fireplace For Cleaning

  • First of all, make sure to clean your fireplace regularly, the outside of your fireplace needs to be cleaned at least once in a whole month. The inside of your fireplace should be cleaned anytime 1/4, in case more of soot buildup occurs.
  • Cover your fireplace in a tarp. Be sure that the surrounding area of your fireplace is also covered with the help of tarp because this will protect your fireplace from chemicals which you will use in cleaning process. Seal the tarp down by using a duct tape.
  • Next, you need to lay some towels or blankets in the surrouding area of the tarp because this will help you to catch the dripping or running residue from the cleaning solution.
  • Next you need to use a broom & dustpan to sweep up the ash & dust as much as you can. Sweep around the fireplace & use a brush(smaller) to dust your fireplace and then you need to spray your fireplace with water.
  • Safety first, always wear the eye protection & rubber gloves on your hands when using the cleaning chemicals. If you are going to use mild solution then no need to use this equipment, but while using the strong solution such as bleach, strong cleaner, or TSP cleaner then you need to open windows and door to bring fresh air in your room.

Method 2: Cleaning With All Purpose Cleaner

  • Proper cleaning solution should be used, wash your fireplace down with all purpose cleaner, such as Mr clean (multi surface cleaner) & goo all purpose cleaner. Spray this cleaner on a sponge to scrub off the buildup.
  • Next, after scrubbing the fireplace, now switch to mild soap. Mix this mild soap with some water and again scrub at the fireplace stone.
  • Finally, you have to use some more all purpose cleaner, simply spray the cleaner and scrub the stone fireplace again and then go back to mild soap if needed.

Method 3: Deep Cleaning With Trisodium Phosphate

  • Simply mix the TSP(trisodium phosphate powder) with some water. Use 1/2 or one cup of your TSP(trisodium phoshate). Put this TSP into a gallon of warm water. You need to wear hand gloves while using this TSP solution because this is a very harsh chemical that can easily harm your skin.
  • Take a scrub brush & dip it into the TSP mixture before starting to scrub your fireplace. You need to scrub very tough in order to remove all the builup. Be sure to get into the hard to reach places & crannies & nooks.
  • Now you need to make a paste for tough areas. Take a small amount of TSP & water and mix it, apply this TSP paste direclty on the spot area, you need to scrub untill the spot begins to lift from you fireplace.
  • Rinsing is your final step, rinse with water, simply dip you clean sponge into the water. Rinse every part of your fireplace that you used with your TSP solution, and then allow this to dry.
