In order to get mildew off from canvas awnings, you simply need to go through all the mentioned steps carefully and achieve the desired result of your work:
  1. First of all, find the spot on your awning where the mildew is present. Awnings need regular cleaning, but if there is mildew on it then it will require a different type of cleaning solution & elbow grease. Mildew is a type of fungus which is similar to mold. On your awning, the mildew will appear as white or gray spots and will also look like powder.
  2. Hose down your awning so that you will get the best result of the cleaning process, then you need to start by hosing down your awning so it is entirely wet because this step will make your cleaning solution easier to spread and mildew easier to remove.
  3. Now you need to mix the cleaning solution for removing mildew from your canvas awning. To do this mix 1 cup (237ml) bleach, 1/4 cup(59ml) of mild liquid soap, and one gallon (3.8L) of cool water. If you need extra cleaning solution then you can simply double all the quantities.
  4. Now you need to soak your awning in your cleaning solution. Dip your clean cloth into your cleaning solution and then spread this cleaner on your entire awning. Re-dip your cloth if needed so that the cleaning solution reaches every inch of its fabric, otherwise, you will miss some mildew.
  5. Now you need to scrub your canvas when your applied cleaning solution has had time to soak in and then take your soft-bristled brush and then scrub the top side of the awning fabric. Use an energetic circular motion to provoke suds. Scrub every inch of your awning to remove all the mildew.
  6. After that, you need to rinse your awning. After scrubbing all the mildew from your whole awning and then rinse it well with clean water by using the garden hose. Continue rinsing your awning until all the soapy water & dirt have been completely washed off from awning. Don’t leave any bleach residue on the awning fabric because it will cause early disintegration.
  7. Now allow your awning to air dry completely. Most of the awnings are specially designed to dry speedily after the rain, so it will not take too much time to air dry.
  8. If you cleaned the awning in place then simply let your awning to dry on its frame. If you removed the awning, hang it to air dry on line before reinstalling your awnings. Never dry your canvas awnings with any dryer because it will shrink.
