8 Easy Steps For Cleaning The Wood Stove Chimney

During the cold winter night the wood stove helps to create an ambiance of warmth and coziness but on the other hand a neglected wood stove chimney can create a potential disaster for whole family, this is due to the fact that there will be build ups in chimney over time of the creosote and soot. Besides that the chimney which is not cleaned regularly can be the source of a fire hazard. In order to prevent the dangerous situations, follow the given steps below in order to clean up the Wood Stove Chimney:
  1. Clean And Inspect: The user should clean the wood burning stove chimney at least once in a year, and should also inspect it at least once each month.
  2. Check Stove’s Temperature: The next step is to examine the chimney to check if there is any visible smoke, if there is any then it is a sign that the wood stove is running too cold or the chimney is not installed properly. The Creosote can also be produced in case the wood smoke condenses on the inside of a cool chimney. If the stove is burning correctly, then all the smoke should burn in the firebox.
  3. Chimney's Dimension: The chimney of a wood stove is regarded as the important part as it powers a stove. If incase the chimney is too short or has the wrong diameter then it will not regulate heat. In order to make sure that chimney fitted properly check owner’s manual, especially if incase the user's are having problems with draft, smoke, and excess creosote as well.
  4. Remove The Iron Baffle: On top of the wooden stove there is a cast iron baffle. The user needs to remove the baffle and at the same time clean out any ash that may have build up. Its avdvisable to remove the baffle at the time when the stove is cold. Clean out the stove thoroughly and remove any ash. Place a medium-sized fan in front of the stove. The use of the fan is to create an updraft motion in the chimney.
  5. Remove The Chimney Cap: In this step the user needs to go on top of the roof and remove the cap from the chimney. The cap can be easily removed by turning it counter clockwise, and lifting it up carefully.
  6. Clean With Brush: In this step the user needs to clean the chimey using the 6 inch brush meant for chimney. Simply brush up and down in the chimney several times until there will be no more clouds of soot being shown by the brushing action. Incase the fan that is used in the above step is running, it will help to create an updraft that will blow out the soot up and out of the chimney as well.
  7. Connector Pipe: After the above step is done then remove the stove connector pipe and clean it in the area where it can be easily cleaned with the same brush that is used to clean the chimney.
  8. Put Everything Back: Once everything is cleaned then put the cap , connector pipe, as well as the cast iron baffle all back in their repective places.
