Ultimate & Easy Way For Changing/Refacing Kitchen Cabinet Doors

The user can save money on the kitchen remodeling by refacing the cabinet doors instead of replacing them. Refacing cabinet doors is the best way to refresh as well as update the look of a kitchen.

Step 1: Unscrew The Doors

From the hinges of the cabinets unscrew the doors. Start from the top screws then down to the bottom screws. After removing the screws place them in a plastic bag and label it so that it will be easy to know which door they belong to.

Step 2: Remove All Hardware

Unscrew the doorknobs, handles, as well as the other hardware from the cabinet door. Put the hardware into a plastic bag and label it also.

Step 3: Lay The Doors

On a flat and sturdy surface lay the doors. This way, the user will be able to paint the doors without it falling down and also with minimal dripping.

Step 4: Apply A Deglosser

With the help of a scrubber apply the deglosser. Dip the scrubber in a deglosser and then scrub the entire surface of the door. Next, step is to slightly dampen a clean rag in deglosser and then wipe the door down again to make sure that deglosser is applied on the entire surface of the door.

Step 5: Sand The Doors

After the above step is done then use sandpaper or simply a sanding block and start sanding the doors in the back and forth direction of the wood grain. Start sanding with 100-grit sandpaper then 180-grit sandpaper. Finally, use the 220-grit sandpaper. Continue the sanding until the entire surface become smooth and all previous paint or stain is removed.

Step 6: Vacuum

After the sanding is done then vacuum the dust and other debris. The user can use a shop vacuum with a floor cleaning attachment which has soft bristles. At last, wipe down the surface with a tack cloth.

Step 7: Fill Screw And Hardware Holes

If in case the user is using the different sized hardware or changing the position of old hardware, then fill in hardware and screw holes with a wood filling product after the filler dries, sand it with the help of 100-grit sandpaper.

Step 8: Paint The Door

Apply the Prime on the doors with a nylon paintbrush, apply the primer to one side at a time and after the paint dries fully then apply on another side. After the primer from both sides is fully dry then paint the doors with the help of a nylon brush, start applying from the bottom to the top of the door. Again apply the paint one side at a time.

Step 9: Staining The Doors

Apply the stain using a brush. Pick a stain color that matches the color of the wood. While applying the stain, brush with the grains of the wood. Apply 1 thin coat at a time. The user needs to do light sand in between coats of finish. Apply a second or third coat of stain for the darker look. After the stain is fully dry then use a clean tack rag to apply a sealant or a wood finish.
