How To Build Swinging Barn Doors: Building Swinging Barn Doors For A Pole Barn

Building Swinging Barn Doors For A Pole Barn

Pole barn doors can make life more convenient for you, particularly when transporting large or heavy objects into your pole barn. You can install or construct a variety of pole barn door types, including swing doors, sliding doors, overhead doors, and more. Nevertheless, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams can be used to construct strong, long-lasting pole barn doors. Because they are made for heavy-duty use, are simple to work with, and are long-term economical, LVL beams are a popular option for pole barn doors. This is a guide on using LVL material beams to construct pole barn doors.

Items Needed

  • 8-Foot LVL Beams
  • Two 1/2-Inch Or 3/4-Inch Thick Hardwood Boards (Maple Or Oak)
  • Miter Saw & Door Hinges
  • Tape Measure & Hammer
  • 2-Inch Nails (Galvanized Type)
  • 2-Inch Screws (Outdoor, Wooden Type)

Step 1: Buy A Sufficient Quantity Of LVL Beams

To match the requirements of the barn doors you need, buy a sufficient quantity of LVL beams. Pick up the necessary quantity of maple or oak hardwood boards from a lumber and hardware store, along with other necessary supplies.

Step 2: Measure The Height & Width Of Your Pole Barn Door Space

Your pole barn door space's height and breadth should be measured. Cut four LVL beams so that they are each half as wide as the opening on your pole barn door. Finally, using four more LVL beams, cut them to the height of the pole barn doors, remembering to subtract 8 inches from each length to account for the width of the cross beams. Be sure to leave a 2-inch gap beneath each door for simple opening and shutting.

Step 3: Use A Metal Brace To Attach The LVL Beams

Use a metal brace to join the LVL beams together once they have been laid side by side. This will produce each door's basic box frame. Measure the diagonal between the inside bottom corner of one door frame and the inside corner of the other door frame using the tape. The cross bracing can now be trimmed to the correct size. The cross beam should be cut using a miter saw so that it fits exactly inside the frame after marking the appropriate angles at its top and bottom.

Step 4: Match The Length Of The Cross Frame

Make sure the cross frame fits properly within the frame before inserting a set of 2-inch nails to connect it. Trim the two hardwood maple (or oak) 1/2-inch (or 3/4-inch) boards to the same length as the cross frame. To ensure that both pole barn door frames are adequately covered, check the lengths you cut. To achieve this, measure the exact length of both door frames with a tape measure and divide that number by the width of the hardwood board you just bought.

Step 5: Set The Two Boards On Top Of The Frames

The two boards should be placed atop the frames. Then, fasten each board to the bottom and top of the frames as well as the cross bracing using 2-inch heavy-duty galvanized nails. Using the proper screws, attach the hinges and handles to the two doors, making sure to secure them firmly inside the bracing. To give your pole barn door planks a shiny, polished appearance, varnish or stain them.
