How To Build Drawers For A Workbench: Step By Step Process Of Building Drawers For A Workbench

Step By Step Process Of Building Drawers For A Workbench

If you want to build drawers for a workbench then you just need to follow the below-described step by step process carefully:

Step 1: Installing The Spacers

  • Start by measuring the space under the workbench. Take a tape measure and check for width, height, and length of the space under your workbench. Write down each dimension so that you don’t forget it. Use all these measurements to cut your wood to the required size.
  • Now measure & mark 3 pieces of plywood to fit under your bench. These plywood sheets will form the spacers for your drawers. Standard, 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) thick plywood is ideal. Simply measure each one to match the height & length of the space under your bench. You need to use a straightedge to mark each board to the actual dimensions.
  • Next, cut the pieces of your plywood sheets along the lines. Use your table saw or circular saw for this purpose. Cut along with each line you drew on your plywood. Keep your saw straight so your cuts aren’t off.
  • Now, drill one pocket hole into each corner of your plywood sheets. Pocket holes need to be drilled at a 15-degree angle with your wood to make a path for a diagonal screw. Now use a power drill & make a pocket hole in each corner of your plywood, where your sheet will attach to your bench. Your each plywood sheet should have 4 holes, 1 in each corner.
  • The next thing is to attach a plywood sheet to each side of your workbench. Take the first 2 sheets & slide them into your workbench on each side. Let your sheets rest on the support beams that run across the front & back of your bench. Make sure that the sheets are flush with the front & back of your bench. Hold them in place & drill a screw through each of your pilot holes & into your bench.
  • Finally, install the third sheet directly in the middle of your workbench. Measure & mark the point directly in the middle of your bench. Then slide your third sheet into position at that point. Make it flush with the front & back of your bench. Drill screws through with the pocket holes to secure it to your bench.

Step 2: Building The Drawers

  • Firstly, measure the width betwixt each spacer in your workbench. This determines the width of each drawer. Use your tape measure & check the distance betwixt each spacer. Write these measurements down & then use them to make your drawers.
  • Mark your plywood for the base, sides, front & back of your drawers. For your drawer sides, measure the length of the workbench & how deep you want your drawers to be. For the front & back, measure the width betwixt the spacers & the depth of your drawers. For the base, measure the length of your bench & width betwixt the spacers. Mark all of these measurements on your wood in pencil.
  • Now you need to cut your plywood for the drawer base & sides. Use your table saw, circular saw or miter saw to make the cuts. Then cut along each line you drew. Make sure that you keep your saw straight so the cuts are exact.
  • Screw your drawer sides together in order to make a rectangle. Arrange the side, front & back pieces of each drawer to make a rectangle. Drill the 2 screws into each corner to secure all the pieces together. Repeat this step for all your drawers.
  • Now squeeze a layer of your wood glue along the bottom border of your drawer. Work along with the border & squeeze out a line of glue. Use the same amount on your every drawer you are building.
  • Next you need to press the base piece onto the glue. Line up your baseboard with the sides of your drawer. Then press the board down & apply pressure to make your glue stick. Run your hand around the border to ensure your board is attached at all points.
  • Finally, install handles on your front of each drawer. Measure the distance betwixt the screw holes in your handles you’re using & mark those points on the front of each drawer. Now you need to drill a hole into each point. Then, hold your handle over the holes & install the screws from the back. Repeat this step for each drawer.

Step 3: Attaching The Drawers

  • The sliders hardware allows the drawers to slide in & out of your bench. Place the slider on each side of your drawers. Line them up with the bottom edge of your drawer, running from front to back & be sure they are straight. Then screw each 1 into place.
  • Now, measure the distance from the top of your drawer to your sliders. You need to use your tape measure & check the distance from the top of each drawer to your slider.
  • Next, mark the distance for your slider mounts on each spacer. Take the distance you measured from the top of each drawer to your slider. Then, simply measure that distance down from the top of your workbench.
  • Attach your sliders to the sides of each spacer. Take your mounting sliders that correspond with the sliders on your drawers. Hold each one up to the line you drew & make sure it’s straight. Then screw your slider into place.
  • Finally slide your drawers into place. Take each drawer & line up its sliders with your slider mounts on your bench. Tilt the front of your drawer down to insert it into the mount, then angle it up & slide it into position.
