Procedure To Build An Upholstered Storage Ottoman

The procedure to build an upholstered storage ottoman is divided into two parts i.e. build a storage ottoman and upholster a storage ottoman. The user needs to follow both parts of the procedure to build an elegant upholstered storage ottoman:

Build Storage Ottoman

The first part of the procedure is to build a storage ottoman for which the user needs to follow the below-given steps:
  1. Collect Required Materials:
The first step will be to collect all the required materials for building storage ottoman i.e. 3/4" plywood, 1/4" plywood or hardboard, 1" x 8" x 12' board, and 2" x 2" x 4' board. The measurements given are required to build a random sized ottoman. Apart from that, the materials required to build the storage ottoman are Miter Saw, Kreg Jig, 1 1/4" Pocket hole screws, 30" piano hinge, and 2 toy box lid support hinges.
  2. Cut Board Pieces:
After that, the user needs to cut boards as per the dimensions of the ottoman. First, the user needs to cut 1" x 8" x 12' board into 4 pieces with 2 pieces measuring 4' and the other 2 pieces measuring 2'. Then, the user needs to cut 2" x 2" x 4' board into 4 equal pieces.
  3. Create A Box:
The next step will be to create an ottoman box. First, the user needs to build short sides of board by attaching 2 pieces measuring 1" x 8" x 2' with 4 pieces of 2" x 2"x 1' by using wood glue & 1 1/4? pocket hole screws. Alternatively, countersunk wood screws can be used if the user doesn't have a Kreg jig. After that, the user needs to attach long sides of a board measuring 1" x 8" x 4' with short sides by using wood glue and pocket holes.
  4. Attach Box Bottom:
After that, the user needs to cut 1/4" plywood or hardboard for the box bottom and attach it to to the box base with wood glue and finish nails. Once the box bottom is attached, the user needs to cut 3/4" plywood for the box top and make sure everything fits perfectly. The user can drill holes in the top plywood if he wants a tufted ottoman seat.
  5. Paint The Box Feet:
After building an ottoman box, the user can paint the box feet with the matching upholstery color.

Upholster A Storage Ottoman

The second part of the procedure is to upholster a prepared storage ottoman by following the below-given steps:
  1. Collect Required Materials:
The first step is to collect all the required materials for upholstering a storage ottoman such as batting, polyfill, 3/4" foam, 2 and a half yard fabric for outside, 2 yards of fabric for inside and bottom, staple gun with staples, spray adhesive, thick upholstery thread, button kit with fabric cover, and 5" doll needle.
  2. Wrap Ottoman Frame With Batting & Outer Fabric:
After that, the user needs to wrap and staple batting around the ottoman frame and follow that up with outer fabric. It has been recommended to overlap and fold the raw edges at the end of the fabric. The user can also glue the raw edges of the fabric by using fabric glue.
  3. Stick Fabric Inside The Box:
The next step will be to cut fabric for the inside part of the box that should cover the sidewalls of the box as well. The user can cut the inside fabric a little extra that should be folded in. After that, the user needs to spray the inside part of the box with spray adhesive and then smooth the inner fabric along the inside part of the box. The user can fold the fabric at the corners as folded in the gift wrap. The extra fabric should be folded at the edges and then stapled down by using a staple gun.
  4. Prepare Top Plywood:
After that, the user needs to lay 3/4" foam over the top plywood. It has been recommended to cut the foam 1/4" inch larger than the plywood piece. Then, the user needs to layer polyfill over the foam top and then wrap the batting around the foam. The wrapped batting should be stapled down to the plywood bottom.
  5. Tuft And Cover The Plywood Top With Outer Fabric:
The next step is to staple and cover the plywood top with the outer fabric. It has been recommended to staple the outer fabric to the long side of the plywood top first and then tuft the seating with fabric covered buttons. The user needs to tuft the seating at the drilled holes on the plywood. Once tufted, the user needs to staple the other sides of the outer fabric as well. After that, the user needs cover & staple the bottom side box top by using inner fabric and a staple gun.
  6. Attach Box Top To The Frame:
At last, the user needs to attach box top to the box frame with a 30" piano hinge. Apart from that, the user needs to attach toy box lid support hinges to the box top and frame as well. It has been recommended by the experts to attach toy box lid support hinges on each side of the piano hinge. After that, the prepared upholstered storage ottoman can be put to use.
