How To Build A Storage Box Out Of Plywood: Two Easy Ways To Make Wooden Box

Two Easy Ways To Make A Storage/Wooden Box

If you want to build a storage box or simply wooden box yourself then here are the 2 different ways to build a wooden box. You just need to select the desired way and start building a wooden box:

1st Way: Wooden Box With A Hinged Lid

  • First of all, choose the wood for your box. Repurposed wood is a good option to use for this project, such as wood broke down pallets or you can also buy new cut wood.
  • Collect the supplies for this process such as power tools, power outlets, ruler, hammer, nails, wood glue or putty, and plywood boards.
  • Now start measuring as well as marking your boards. First, you need to decide the size of your box. Categorically you want to regulate how long, wide and tall your box will be & then mark the measurements on your plywood boards by using a ruler and a pencil.
  • Then you need to cut your plywood boards if it is not in a suitable size. You need to use a hand or circular saw to cut your plywood boards according to the taken measurements. You need to remember that you will need 4 boards for all the sides, one for the base, one for your lid.
  • After that, you need to assemble all the side pieces by using a butt joint. Join all the sides together at a right angle using the wood glue betwixt the joints for persistence and at this point, the box should look like a square without any base or lid attached. Next, you need to drill or hammer in the finishing nails, wood screws or the dowels.
  • Next you need to attach the hinged lid to your box. Simply set your lid on the box, so the hinged lid is flush now, and then you need to measure and mark where you want to place the hinges. Keep all hinge knuckle facing out from the back of the box and then you have to use drill or hammer to attach it to the side and then attach the hinged lid.
  • Finally, fill any nail holes by using the wood putty and putty knife to apply it on the nail holes. Let the applied wood putty dry wholly before sanding out the areas smooth.

2nd Way: Wooden Box With A Sliding Lid

  • Firstly choose the wood type for your box. Repurposed wood is useful for this type of project or boards from the broken down pallets or you can also buy and cut new wood for your box.
  • Collect all the useful tools such as a ruler, hammer nails, wood glue or putty and the selected boards.
  • Now start measuring and marking your selected board. First of all, you need to select the size of your box. Respectively, you want to determine the length, width, and height of your box. Remember that you need to take the grooves and the lid that will be narrower in order to make them slide and then mark the measurements on the boards by using a ruler and a pencil.
  • Now you need to cut your boards if they are not in a suitable size, simply you need to use a hand or a circular saw to cut your board according to the taken measurement. You need to remember that you will need 4 boards for all the sides, one for the base, one for your lid.
  • Next you need to cut grooves into your sideboards. You need to use a table saw or a router with a guide to cut a consecutive crosswise groove near what will be the inside & top of your box. The groove will run about 1/8" inch alone with the top so the lid slides into the place. Be sure to cut equal grooves into 3 sides of the box.
  • Now start cutting the front side of the box. Simply take one of the sides which is already cut into the groove & then measure from the top where the box lid will be placed to the bottom of the groove which you've cut. You need to use the same distance to cut a consecutive crosswise line across the top of the box front.
  • Assemble all the side pieces by using a butt joint. Be sure the grooves are now facing inward. Join all the sides together at a right angle by using wood glue betwixt the joints for more durability and it should look like a square with no base or lid attached till now. Next, you need to use a hammer or drill in the finishing nails, wood screws or the dowels.
  • Now you need to cut a groove for the lid. If you want the lid to be flush with all the sides of your box, you need to use a saw to cut the groove along all the sides of your lid. Slide your lid into the groves & over the top of your box.
  • Finally fill the nails holes by using some wood putty and a putty knife to fill all the nail holes. Let the applied wood putty dry wholly before sanding smooth and now you have finished your job.
