How To Build A Storage Bench With Upholstered Lid: Simple Procedure & Tools Required

Simple Procedure & Tools Required To Build A Storage Bench With Upholstered Lid

The upholstered bench can be used indoor as well as in the outdoor areas. The users can easily build the storage bench with the upholstered lid at home by gathering the below-mentioned items and then following the below-mentioned procedure:

Materials And Tools Required

  • 4' Level, Utility Knife, Scratch Awl
  • Staple Gun, Measuring Tape, Screw Gun
  • Table Saw, Scissors, 2'Level
  • Plywood Sheets, Speed Square, Piano Hinges
  • 2x3 Boards, Furring Strip, Screws
  • Upholstery Foam & Staples

Procedure

  • Measure And Trim Boards: Start by measuring from the walls so as to find out the suitable length for the seating of the bench and then trim 2x3 boards for building the frame of the measured length by using the chop saw.
  • Mark The Line: The normal size dimension for the bench seating is near about 18 inches in height and 16 inches in depth. Then calculate the 18 inches from the surface of the floor and then use the four-foot level so as to mark the line all across each wall.
  • Affix The Trimmed Board: The users need to locate the studs within the wall and then hold up the board to the leveled line and then they need to attach the boards with the wall by drilling down the 2 screws at each of the located studs in the wall. Then they need to repeat the same step while working with the other surface of the wall. The users are advised to use the toenail screws while affixing the trimmed 2x34 board with each other at their edges so as to add more strength.
  • Build The Cleats: The cleat is usually defined as the narrow wood piece that is mainly used for strengthening the structural purpose. Then they need to use the table saw so as to trim the 2x3 sized board in the half lengthways so as to create the 2 cleats. Then the users need to use the chop saw so as to trim these cleats as of the same length as the affixed board. Then they need to take the pre-longer of the 2 cleats and then cut an extra 16 3/4" away. Then they need to trim the 16' cleats and then place them aside so as to use them later on.
  • Affix The Cleats: Then measure the 16 inches on the surface of the floor from the surface of the wall. Then the users need to align the cleats over the floor surface at the sixteen marked area. Then they need to shaft the individually trimmed cleat upwards to the wall and then they need to align the cleat corner sixteen 3/4 away from the 2x3 corresponding corner. Then both the cleats should lie on the surface of the floor and then sixteen inches from the surface of the wall by having the gap of 3/4 in between the trimmed cleat and the wall cleat. Then they need to screw down the cleat in their decided place.
  • Build The Structure Of Bench: Then tear down the plywood sheet of 3/4 inch in 2 pieces that should be of the 18 inches in height and the long as the similar cleat. These plywood pieces will work as the constructive faces of the seating of the bench. Then they need to trim 2 more pieces of the 16x18 sized plywood sheet and then place them aside so as to use them later. Then they need to slide the right face of the plywood within the gap of 3/4 within the cleats and they also need to pass out the edge of the plywood piece as to fit it snugly in one perfect place. Then they need to lift upward the other plywood piece in the frontmost side of the cleat and then the users need to square up both the plywood pieces and then drill it within the face of the other piece corner. Then distance up the front of the plywood top and then 2x3 sized board over the wall surface. Once the plywood faces are on the same level then they need to sue the screw gun so as to affix it with the cleat.
  • Craft The Bench Base: Then they need to place the 16 sized cleats apart inside the corner of the seat of the bench and then screw it with the floor. Hold up the 16x18 sized pieces against the cleat and with the frontmost corner of the seat of the bench. The users are advised to make sure it is on the perfect level and square and then screw it down within the cleat and the face of the plywood. Then they need to repeat the same procedure with another corner of the seat of the bench.
  • Affix The Furring Strip: Then the users need to trim the 3/4 x 1-1/2 strip in the halves so as to make the 2 3/4 x 3/4 sections. Then they need to calculate the size dimensions from the edge of the seat of the bench with the ends. Then they need to trim the 3/4 x3/4 so as to fit up with these lengths and then affix it with the ledger and with the wall by using the adhesive and nail gun as well.
  • Calculate And Mark Down The Central Points: The users then need to calculate and mark down the central area over the furring strips, they also need to mark down the central area over the piano hinges as well. Then they need to line up both the central point of the furring strip and the piano hinge and then mark the holes of the screws by using the scratch awl.
  • Build The Lid: The users need to calculate the flat length and the depth of the bench. In order to build the lid they need to trim the 3/4 sized plywood sheet as per the size and 1 inch for the overhanging purpose. If in case the users are crafting the corner bench then the one lid should get extended with the complete length from the bench corner with the wall. The 2nd lid should only get extended from the bench corner to the 1st lid. Then they need to calculate the measurements so as to locate the lid center and once they located the lid center they need to line it with the piano hinges and then mark down the holes for the screws by using the scratch awl and then place the lid in the exact place.
  • Cut The Foam And Fabric: Once the users placed the lids in the correct place then they need to lay the foam over the surface of the lid and then mark the line of the foam by using the pen. Then they need to cut the marked foam as per its size. The user then need to trim the fabric as per the measured size as well by using the scissors.
  • Affix The Foam And Fabric: Then the users need to staple down the trimmed foam and fabric over the lid by using the staple gun and then staple the corners as well.
  • Affix The Lid: Finally the users need to affix the lid with the bench structure by aligning the screw marks and then screwing it respectively.
