  • Wood Glue, Wood Screws, 1 1/2-Inch
  • Drill, Spackle & Paint

  • 2 Planks Of 2-By-5 Lumber, 12 Inches
  • 1 Sheet Of 3/4-Inch Plywood, 15 By 44 Inches
  • Piano Hinge
  • Screws, 1/2-Inch

Steps

  1. Make a rectangular box shape from 2 sheets of 3/4 inch plywood measuring 12 by 40" inches and 2 sheets measuring 12-13 1/2" inches and smaller sheets should be on the inside edge of the longer ones so the total dimensions of your box are 15 by 40" inches.
  2. Now you need to glue all the corner joints of your box and let the applied glue dry. Now you need to secure your box together with three 1 1/2-inch wood screws driven through with the sides of long sheets of your plywood and into the ends of shorter ones. 1 screw at top & bottom of your box and 1 centered, 12 screws altogether.
  3. Now, place a sheet of 15 by 40 inch, 1/2inch plywood over the top of your box with all the edges flush with the edges of your box. Secure the plywood in place with some wood screws and drive them in 6-8 inches around the perimeter of the 15-by-40-inch sheet into your box.
  4. Stand your box on end and position all the two planks of 18-inch 2-by-5 lumber box end, flush with the corners of the box, flush at the top of the box with 6 inches extending past the base of your box now there are two of the bench legs. Secure all the 2 legs in place with 6 screws(wood) driven through the bench legs into the end of your box, two at the top and the bottom of the box and two centered.
  5. Next you need to insert a piece of 12-inch 2 by 5 lumber betwixt the bench legs. The lumber piece should be flush at the bottom & top of your box & also fit snugly betwixt the bench legs. Secure the lumber as you did with the bench legs.
  6. Turn your bench over to expose the other end of it and then you need to attach 2nd pair of bench legs, and a 12-inch 2-by-5 in betwixt them.
  7. Now you need to fill visible screw holes with spackle and then leave it to dry before painting your bench box and the legs and also the sheet of 15 by 44 inch 3/4 inch plywood (lid of your bench) and then allow it to dry.
  8. Finally you need to center a piano hinge on the long edge of your lid and then secure it with 1/2 inch screws in the screw hole of piano hinge. Now you need to place your lid on the top of your bench and then secure the other half of your piano hinge to the back of your bench box in order to finish your storage bench with the hinged lid.
