How To Build A Simple Wall Shelf: Easy Steps & Items Needed For Building Wall Shelf

Easy Steps & Items Needed For Building A Simple Wall Shelf

A Wall shelf is a good idea in order to keep or store precious things such as books and other such things. Do you want to build a simple wall shelf yourself? If yes then you just need to collect some required items and then go through all the given steps. Here are the item list and steps for this process.

Things You Will Need

  • Stud Finder & Miter Saw
  • Door Casing Molding, 5/8-inch by 2, 1/4-inch by 96-inch
  • Finish Nailer & Finish Nails, 1 1/4-inch
  • Radial-Arm Saw
  • Particleboard Shelving & Bullnose Edge
  • Paintbrush & Enamel Paint

Steps

After collecting all the useful tools & materials, now you need to follow all the given steps:
  • First of all, you need to measure upward from your floor and then make a mark on both of your walls in every 12" inches, make sure to get started from the bottom. First, start marking for five shelves, about 2 inches from the front side of your wall and an indistinguishable set 2 inches from your back wall.
  • Now you need to run your stud finder along both walls on the right as well as left. You need to locate at least 2 studs running horizontally up on both walls and then mark it. If your wall installation is expanded than 48 inches, run your stud finder along with the back wall & then mark all studs there, too.
  • Next, measure the depth of the opening from back to front. You need to use a miter saw for cutting one piece of 5/8-by-2 1/4 inch door casing to fit every set of marks for both sides of your wall.
  • After that, you need to place a thick edge of your door cashing flush with all the marks at the bottom wall shelf. The door casing has 1 5/8inch edge and tapering to a thin 1/4 inch edge at the bottom shelf. Be sure that your door casing flat against your wall with the 5/8inch which side is facing upward to support your shelf, do this with both sides.
  • Now you need to nail your door casing to your wall on the studs, use the marks which you have made for all the studs. Simply nail through the center of your door casing by using a finish nailer and one 1/4 nails, do this with both sides.
  • Then you need to measure betwixt all the 2 pieces which you've just installed if the distance betwixt your walls is wider than 48 inches. Cut and then nail a piece of your door casing to your wall studs on your back wall. Be sure that the top of your back piece of door casing matches and flush with the tops of your door casing on both sides.
  • Next, simply measure the length betwixt your walls. Subtract 1/8 inch as this is only to avert your shelf from binding when you install it. You need to use a radial-arm saw to cut your bull-nosed shelving material to the taken length. Now place your shelf on top of your already installed door casings. If the shelf binds or sticks then you need to trim another 1/8 inch off and then try to fit it again until it fits easily.
  • Next, nail your bull-nosed shelf to the top of your door casing around the perimeter with the help of the finish nailer. After every 6 inches, space the nails.
  • Finally install your next shelf above your first shelf, repeat the 3 and 7 steps. Also, paint your shelving unit by using the paintbrush and enamel paint.

Tips & Warning

  1. Tip 1: You need to know that using a door casing will also provide a nice, clean look to your shelving.
  2. Tip 2: Always remember that you can only paint anything before it's installed if you need then. Other choices for wall shelving are plywood or a medium-density laminate which contains a slick plastic coating. Both of these choices are a bit expensive, and you also need to cover all the raw edge.
  3. Warning: Always try to wear the safety glasses when building the wall shelves.
