Materials Required

  • Steel Cables & Circular Or Hand Saw
  • Eye Hooks & Measuring Tape
  • Tenon Maker & Drawknives
  • Drill & Forstner Bits

Part I-Prepare The Wood Logs

  • Step 1: The users need to start by choosing the best wood logs for preparing the log bed and the ideal choice can be the fire affected standing departed tree as the wildlife burns the diseased trees over the surface of the ground but also leaves the dead healthy trees standing over the surface of the ground. The fire affected trees also lose all of its bark and that is why it will also save the time of the users when they will start their building procedure. The users can also find out the fallen logs over the ground surface or those wooden logs that wash at the riverbank. The users can also purchase the wood logs from the sawmill and they will get to know whether these wooden logs are rotten or they are having any other issues that can make them unsuitable for building up the log bed.
  • Step 2: They also need to saw up the wooden logs to that exact length that the users need for crafting the log bed. The 2 to 4 foot saw and the 2 to 3-foot posts can be used to build the legs and the edges of the footboard and the headboard. The users are advised to trim the posts from the large and the sturdy logs. Then they need to saw the four rails in order to apart the posts and they need to calculate the thickness of the mattress and then trim the rails and they should be one inch longer. When the users trim the tenons in order to make it get fitted with the rails directly to the posts as they will be of the mattress width.
  • Step 3: Then they need to trim the spindles so as to affix it in between the tracks of the footboard and the headboard. The users need near about 36-inches spindles in order to craft the headboard and in order to craft the footboard the user needs near about 24-inches spindles. Once the users trimmed the tenons they are advised to measure near about 1-inch shorter as the number of the spindles that the users need depends upon the bed size. The users then need to prepare the bed rails in order to attach the head post with the foot post and then calculate the length of the mattress and then trim the rails of the bed in a way that they are 1 inch longer.
  • Step 4: Then the users need to detach the bark from the entire surface of the wooden logs by using the drawknives. The drawknives are the blades that are having the two handles so that the users can set the blades against the wood. The curved drawknife is used to detach the bark and the straight drawknife is used to shape the wooden log.
  • Step 5: Then they need to form up the tenons within the spindles and the rails and to do so the users need to use the drawknife. The users can also use the tenon maker that is attached to the electric drill and then it works like the pencil sharpener.
  • Step 6: The users then need to shape up the mortises by using the electric drill and the Forstner bits as well. The mortises that are used for the headboard needs to be trimmed at 23 cm and 1.1m from the surface of the floor. The mortises that are used for the footboard needs to be trimmed at 23cm and 80 cm accordingly.

Part II-Assembling The Bed

  • Step 1: The users need to affix the eye hook made up of the metal at each one of the posts near about 30 cms from the surface of the floor. The users need to affix the metal eye hooks so that they can easily stretch the cable in between the right sides head post and the left-sided head post and the left-sided head post and the right-sided foot post respectively.
  • Step 2: Then the users need to affix the cables diagonally in between the bedposts by using the metal eye hooks. Then they need to use the turnbuckles at the centers in order to fasten the cables and to hold up the bed. The users need to adjust it accordingly in order to be assured that the bed is in square shape.
  • Step 3: Then they need to make sure that the top rails of the bed are near to the foot and the head so that the spring box will get fitted up securely without slipping.
  • Step 4: In order to protect the log bed, the users need to apply the paint over the entire surface of the bed and then place the mattress accordingly.
