Steps And Items Needed To Build A Kitchen Island With Breakfast Bar

If you want to build your kitchen island with a breakfast bar then this article is for you. You simply need to gather all the required tools & supplies and then follow the given steps to finish your work within a short period of time. Here are the items list and steps:

Tools & Supplies

  • Unfinished Base Cabinet & Counter Top
  • X-acto Knife & Construction Adhesive
  • Stain or Paint of your choice & Clear Paintable Caulk
  • Caulk Gun & Metal Shelf Brackets
  • Trim, 2 1/2" Screws & Rev-a-Shelf Garbage and Recycling Pullout

8 Steps for this project

  • If you have an existing wall that you are going to work with, at the desired height of the breakfast bar, score the drywall. If you want the breakfast bar at standard bar height, then you have to score the drywall at 39" which is actually 42" (bar height) minus the width of a 2x4 (1 1/2") & thickness of your countertop is near about 1 1/2".
  • Next, you need to paint or stain the base cabinets in your selected color. Use SW-9193 (Sherwin-Williams Debonair) to watch your accent wall in the kitchen. Now you have to bring your base cabinet in & attach it to the half wall with 2 1/2 screws through the back of your cabinet into the studs in your wall.
  • You need to add a 2×4 cap to finish off the top of your wall frame. If you build from your existing wall, the 2×4 cap will easily sit raised the drywall since there is no way to cut this 2×4 steep frames below drywall without damaging it.
  • Next, attach the metal brackets to the studs along with the breakfast bar wall. Position your countertop then apply adhesive (construction) along with the 2×4 cap & attach it to the brackets.
  • Now simply attach the main countertop with construction adhesive. You need to use a 1? thick edge-glued pine from Menards for your countertops and so far it’s holding up fine. If sealed & stained it really well earlier adheres it to the cabinet.
  • Segregate the cabinet is entirely up to personal inclination & how you plan to use it now. You first need to add 3/4" melamine dividers on either side of your large middle cabinet & then attached it to the back wall & the front face frame with 1 1/4" pocket hole screws. The sheet of melamine is very cheaper than the plywood but 3/4 " plywood would also work for this project.
  • You have to add a face frame along with the middle of the center cabinet & one more melamine divider then attach it to the back wall & new middle face frame with 1 1/4? pocket hole screws. To finish it up, seal all the seams with white caulk.
  • The Rev-a-Shelf garbage & recycling pullout is good for the kitchen island with breakfast bar because it will organize & keep the garbage nice & hidden.
