How To Build A Kitchen Island Using Base Cabinets: Different Parts & Steps

Different Parts & Steps To Build A Kitchen Island Using Base Cabinets

The users can easily build the Kitchen Island using base cabinets by following the below-mentioned parts with steps:
Gather All The Materials And Tools: The users need to start by gathering all the tools and the materials that they require while performing this task like Two base cabinets, Sandpaper, Wood glue, counter top slab, Clamps, wood screws, Drill-driver, Circular saw, screwdriver bits, Pencil, Drill bits, Tape measure, Wood screws and 2x4 board that should be 8 ft long.

Part 1: Joining The Cabinets

  • Step 1: Start by fastening together the cabinets back to the back so that the users can get the perfect size dimensions and to do so they need to place the cabinets over the flat surface.
  • Step 2: Then the users need to apply the wood glue on the base, top and to the side corners and to the back area of one of the cabinet.
  • Step 3: Then set both the cabinets together in a way that their tops and the sides are aligned perfectly.
  • Step 4: Then you need to use the clamps and affix it to the top of the cabinets accordingly.
  • Step 5: Once the clamps are affixed the users need to bore the pilot holes so as to attach the cabinets together by using the wood screws down to their top corners.
  • Step 6: The users then need to cautiously lean the assembly to one side and making sure that the sides are perfectly arranged and the clamp combines the cabinet with each other. Then the users need to nail down the crews at a distance of 2 inches from the base corners. Then allow the wood glue to dry for almost one complete night.

Part 2: Installing The Ground Cleats

The flooring cleats are the two boards of the size 2x4 that are directly affixed to the floor. The bottom cabinets will get directly fitted over these cleats and will be screwed so as to hold the kitchen island directly to the floor. The users need to make sure to use only the straight board for building the floor cleats. The users can easily install with these steps:
  • Step 1: Start by measuring the thickness of the cabinets so as to determine the cleat length.
  • Step 2: Then the users need to trim the floor cleats by using the circular saw. The cleats should be of 2x4 length.
  • Step 3: Then they need to calculate sidewall width of the cabinets and the toe-kicks as well.
  • Step 4: Then place the right side of the island base upwards over the floor and the users need to place it at their desired place. Then trace down all the four edges of the cabinet island to the floor by using the dark pencil and then detach the island cabinet from that place.
  • Step 5: The users need to calculate from the marked lines by using the width dimensions of the toe-kick and the sidewall. Then mark down the floor.
  • Step 6: Place all the trimmed cleat at their marked position respectively.
  • Step 7: Then tightly affix the cleats to the marked area on the floor by drilling the pilot holes and nailing down the screws.

Part 3: Position The Island Base

  • Step 1: Start by fitting the island base over the attached cleats so that the cabinets lay horizontal to the floor.
  • Step 2: Ensure that island cabinet is perfectly positioned at the exact drawn lines at every corner.
  • Step 3: Once the users checked the alignment of the island cabinet they need to drill the point holes and attach it via the toe-kick of the cabinets to the cleat that is behind the cabinet by using the screws.

Part 4: Preparing The Counter top

  • Step 1: Start by calculating the exterior size dimensions of the island base top and then the users need to increase the overhang thickness and the length of the island counter top.
  • Step 2: Once the users calculated the size dimensions of the counter top then they need to trim it down by using the circular saw.
  • Step 3: After trimming it down the users need to use the sandpaper and rub it over the corners of the counter top so as to create the smooth counter top corners.
  • Step 4: The users can also sand down the upper counter top surface in order to form the smooth surface.

Part 5: Installing The Counter top

  • Step 1: Start by placing the trimmed counter top over the island and arrange as per the plan.
  • Step 2: Then the users need to calculate the size from the exterior counter top corners to the exterior side of the cabinets in order to be assured that the placed counter top lays parallel to the front/back sides of the island respectively.
  • Step 3: Then they need to start drilling the point holes from the interior area of the base cabinets and nail down the wood screws there through the affixed blocks of the cabinet and to the counter top base.
