How To Build A Floor To Ceiling Cabinet: Step By Step Process To Build A Floor-To-Ceiling Cabinet

Step By Step Process To Build A Floor-To-Ceiling Storage Cabinet

Built-in storage solutions are popular & trendy items among the majority of modern homeowners, due to the reason that they do away with the cost of buying extra furniture. For instance, a built-in floor-to-ceiling storage cabinet can be used for many purposes, including in the kitchen for food storage & in the garage or workshop. Building this type of built-in will be very useful for homeowners, which in turn helps minimize clutter and stay organized, instead of buying expensive custom cabinetry.

Step 1: Measure The Length, Depth & Height

First of all, calculate the length, depth, as well as height of the space where you are going to install your storage cabinet, with the help of measuring tape. After calculating the desired depth of your cabinet, take away any baseboard or trim from the wall by cutting across it using a reciprocating saw and pry it away from the wall with the help of a pry bar.

Step 2: Trim Two Pieces Of 3/4-Inch Plywood

Now, trim two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood on a table saw according to the measurements you just took. These pieces will function as the top as well as the bottom of the cabinet. Trim two more pieces of 3/4-inch plywood for the sides of your storage cabinet, using the depth and the height measurement minus 1 1/2 inches.

Step 3: Place The Plywood Base Flat On The Floor

Place the trimmed plywood base even & uniform on the floor in the preferred position of the storage cabinet. With the help of a stud finder, find out the floor studs, and fix or attach the board in place by driving nails from a nail gun along the top of the board into the floor studs. Secure the top of the cabinet to the ceiling with the help of a stud finder in order to find out the ceiling studs and driving nails across the plywood in the ceiling studs.

Step 4: Slide The Side Panels Of The Storage Cabinet Into Place

Smoothly move the side panels of the storage cabinet into place so that they sit comfortably betwixt the top and bottom panels and are flush with the wall on one of the two sides of the cabinet. With the help of a stud finder, find out the wall studs, and attach the plywood side panels in place by driving nails from a nail gun across the plywood into each of the studs. Put down the nails roughly every 6 inches along each stud.

Step 5: Determine The Ideal Height For The Shelves

Ascertain or establish the perfect height for the shelves in your storage cabinet, before dividing the total height of the cabinet by the height of the shelves to establish how many shelves you can adjust into the cabinet. You may need to make some minor adjustments, which are totally dependent on the height of the cabinet, to make the height of all the shelves equal.

Step 6: Calculate & Mark The Positions Of Each Shelf

Calculate and mark, with the help of a pencil, the positions of each shelf on the plywood side panels. Trim the shelves for your storage cabinet out of 3/4-inch plywood with the help of the table saw. The measurements of each shelf should be equal to the depth of the cabinet as well as the length of the cabinet minus 1 1/2 inches.

Step 7: Install Plywood Shelves

Now, it is time for the installation of the plywood shelves by driving nails from a nail gun at a downward angle across the top of the shelf into the wall studs through the back of the shelf and into the side panels of the shelf on either side. This process is usually known as toe-nailing. Take assistance from someone in order to help you hold the shelves as you nail them in place.

Step 8: Install Hinges

Trim two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood to the height and half the width measurement of your storage cabinet for the purpose of the cabinet doors. Fasten one side of a pair of metal hinges, using screws, to the back of one of the doors on the left side, one near the top and one near the bottom of the door. Install the hinges on the back of the second door on the right side, imitating the position of the hinges on the first door.

Step 9: Install The Doors

Attach the doors by fastening the other side of each of the hinges, using screws, to the side panels inside the storage cabinet. Install the hardware on the outside of the doors by calculating them in order to locate the exact center, about 1 inch from the center edge, and fastening a metal knob into the face of each door. Open as well as close the doors to test the hinges.

Step 10: Paint The Storage Cabinet

Finally, paint the storage cabinet with the color of your choice. Apply a layer of interior-grade latex primer first before allowing the primer to dry completely. After that, put or spread a layer of interior-grade latex paint. Give the paint at least 24 hours to dry fully before you can use the cabinet again.
