How To Build A Faux Column On A Flat Wall: Step By Step Process Of Building Faux Column On A Flat Wall

Step By Step Process Of Building A Faux Column On A Flat Wall

A faux column is a kind of column that has no organizational & systemic function. Generally, the main objective of a faux column is decorative, or to put or keep a fault, blemish, or undesirable feature in a wall out of sight. You can build a faux column from plywood. There is no need to have any special carpentry skills when it comes to creating a faux column, in spite of the fact that you may want to have the plywood pieces cut at a home improvement center if you don't have the power tools at home.
  1. Mark The Area On The Wall: First of all, using a pencil, mark the area on the wall where you are going to install the column. Draw an outline that strongly suggest the outer perimeter of the column. With the help of a chalk or masking tape, mark the floor at the bottom of the column in order to show the column's depth.
  2. Measure The Height Of The Column: Now, Calculate or compute the height of the column you drew on the wall, and also calculate the depth of the column as designated on the floor. These calculations are the dimensions of the two sides of the column. Calculate the width of the column. This width as well as the height of the column are the dimensions of the column's face. You need to buy two pieces of plywood in the suitable dimensions for the sides, and one piece of plywood in the suitable dimensions for the face. You will also need one piece to install or fix over the top of the column, the dimensions of which should match up to the width of the side pieces as well as the width of the face piece. Miter cut the outer edges of all pieces in order to make sure that when they are put together, they will form a 90 degree angle where the pieces join.
  3. Write Side A, Side B & Side C: Using a pencil, write "side A" on the piece of plywood that will shape the left side of the column. Write "side B" on the face of the column, and write "side C" on the piece of plywood that will shape the right side of the column.
  4. Calculate The Difference: Calculate the difference between the depth of the two side pieces of plywood and the width of the column. This is the width of the space on the wall underneath the column as soon as it has been assembled. Trim 3 pieces of 2-by-4 lumber to this width.
  5. Screw The Pieces Into The Wall: Fasten or tighten the pieces of 2-by-4 into the wall, using screws, where the column will be located. Place one each near the bottom, middle, and the top of the column. The pieces should be joined or gathered in the middle of the space for the column. With the help of 2-inch wood screws, drill pilot holes into the 2-by-4s and the wall before you insert the screws. Tap wall anchors into the pilot holes in the wall except if you hit a wall stud.
  6. Apply A Bead Of Wood Glue On The Edge Of Side A: Place side A on the left side of the column where you are going to install it. Press the back of side A in opposition to the 2-by-4 pieces that you fastened into the wall in Step 5. Put or spread a bead of wood glue on the edge of side A that connects the wall, before screwing side A to the the 2-by-4 lumber you fastened into the wall in Step 5. With the help of 2-inch wood screws, drill a pilot hole into the side of the column as well as into the plywood before you insert the screws.
  7. Install Side C Of The Column: Repeat Step 6 when it comes to installing side C of the column. Put or spread a bead of wood glue to the mitered edges of side A as well as side C. Fit the face piece, side B, into place so that the mitered edges meet. Stand on a ladder and line the top of the column with the help of wood glue. Put down the top piece of the column into place before allowing all glue to dry overnight.
  8. Nail The Edges Of Side B: Fasten or secure the edges of side B with the help of 1.5-inch finishing nails. Stand on the ladder again, and secure the top piece into place using the finishing nails. Fill in any gaps in the seams betwixt pieces using wood putty. Wait for it to dry in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, before sanding the edges.
  9. Seal The Bottom Of The Column: Now, it is time to seal the bottom of the column using caulk. Wipe off excess caulk using the tip of your finger before allowing it to dry in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
  10. Paint The Faux Column: Finally, paint the faux column in accordance with your own likings. Paint a layer of primer on first, then allow the primer to dry before painting subsequent layers in whatever color you want to use for the column.
