How To Build A Credenza: Step By Step Process Of Building A Credenza

Step By Step Process Of Building A Credenza

The credenza is known to provide the additional work surface and also offers the extra storage space and a better organization. The easy step by step process of building a credenza is as follows:

Step 1: Breaking The Walnut Plywood

The walnut plywood is not readily accessible to a lot of people, and it usually costs more than the maple or the birch plywoods. But the reason to use the walnut plywood is that it is really beautiful and will look nice and attractive than the stained birch plywood. With the help of a table saw break down the plywood in the individual components. Basically, the credenza is simply a box with or without shelves. So cut the pieces according to the needed size and the availability of the space, also use the center-finding jig that will help to place holes for the dowels.

Step 2: Assemble The Body

  • The sides, as well as the center support must be sandwiched in between the top and the bottom panels. In order to save the expensive walnut plywood, simply use a panel of 1/2? inch maple plywood for the back panel of the credenza that will sit inside a rabbet all along the back. If the user wants half of the credenza to have the shelves, then use a shelf pin jig for placing the holes in the right places where the shelf is going to be attached. Now there will be a nice looking plywood box, now cut out the leg assemblies on which the credenza will sit on.
  • Cut the curved legs for which the user needs to measure out and then cut the pieces with the help of a jigsaw, make sure that the credenza cabinet will directly sit on some portion of the legs, and not just secured to the sides using screws. To complete this, screw-in the 2 tall leg assemblies on either side, mount a double-up short leg directly in the center. This will be for the center legs. For more support, cut out some matching short legs and then glue them right to the inside of the outside assemblies.

Step 3: Add Door Panels

  • Now that free-standing, structurally credenza is ready, make some sliding doors. If the user wants the doors to slide in back and forth direction, use some of the walnut lumber to make a strip with the 2 channels cut into it. The 2 of these strips, will be one at top and one at the bottom, will hold up the door panels, allowing them to slide freely in each of the channel.
  • Before securing them in a permanent place, use a biscuit joiner to cut out a small slot right in the bottom of both of the door panels. In order to reduce the friction while moving, cut some of the small pieces of acrylic and then glue them right in the bottom slots. Mount the strips as well as the doors captured in it inside the opening of the credenza.
  • For hiding the front edge of the door strips, use more of the walnut lumber for making a simple mitered face frame. These 4 pieces are glued to the front of the plywood box and fix with the help of pin nails.
