In order to prevent the post look ugly, you need to cover these posts. First of all, you have to collect the required tools & materials for the process & then go through the step by step instructions carefully & try building a box column that will help cover your post:

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Stud Finder & Tape Measure
  • Miter Saw & Table Saw
  • Pneumatic Nailer
  • Pneumatic Finish Nailer
  • Oak Crown Molding
  • Wood Glue & Oak Plywood
  • Finish Nails & Oak Molding

Step 1: Construct The Box

Tear or cut oak plywood into 4 pieces of the desired column width as well as height. You don't have to cut them at an angle, due to the fact that the trim will cover the cut edges. Secure or affix 3 of the pieces with the help of glue and nails in order to make a long, three-sided box. Cut two pieces of scrap 1" x 1" to a length that is nearly 2/3 of the width of the box. Glue as well as nail those pieces inside of the box to the top of contrasting sides.

Step 2: Fasten And Complete The Column

With the help of a stud finder, locate the joist to which the pole is secured or affixed. Position the box around the post in order to make sure that the pieces of scrap wood are underneath the joist. Secure or attach the box to the ceiling with the help of nails through those pieces from below into the joist. Fasten the 4th piece of oak plywood with the help of glue & nails to finish the box column.

Step 3: Add The Trim

If you are using the outside-corner molding for the trim, then you need to glue it to the corners of the column. Use the finish nailer in order to attach or affix the molding. If you prefer another kind of molding, then trim it lengthwise on one edge to a 45-degree angle. Glue as well as nail the molding to the column, making sure to fit the angled edges together at the corners. Add any extra trim using glue and nails.

Step 4: Attach The Crown And Base Molding

Trim the crown molding to length, the underside of the molding should be of the same measurement as the column width. Join & seam the ends at 45 degrees. Remember that the crown molding must be turned over when it is being joined. Glue as well as nail the crown molding to the top of the box column. Trim the base molding, the top of the molding needs to be of the same width as the column. Join & seam the ends of the molding at 45 degrees. Glue as well as nail the base molding to the underside of the box column. Fill the nail holes with the help of wood putty before sanding and staining the column.
