How To Build A Bookcase Wall Unit: Easy Process Of Building A Bookcase Wall Unit

Easy Process Of Building A Bookcase Wall Unit

A bookcase, also known as a bookshelf, is a type of furniture with crosswise shelves, repeatedly in a cabinet, mostly used to store books or some printed materials. The bookshelf is commonly used in some types of private homes, public as well as university libraries, offices, and bookstores. If you are looking to build a bookcase wall unit at your home, then go through the below-mentioned steps carefully:

Step 1: Preparation

  • Design And Measure: You can build a wall bookcase to fit a particular space in your home or can also make the one that is a standard size so that it can be moved in a variety of locations. Measure the space on the wall on which the bookcase will sit. Decide how tall shelf unit to be and how wide. The other point to consider is to decide if the bookcase will have an open or a closed back. If you want to keep the back open, the books may lean on or can touch the wall that is behind the bookcase.
  • Choose The Wood: The wood used will have a greater impact on the finished look of the piece as well as its cost and durability. Since the solid wood can cost more, you can use the plywood with a hardwood veneer. For that choose a 3/4 inches plywood for the body as well as for the shelves of the bookcase and a 1/4 inches piece of plywood for the back.

Step 2: Cutting

  • Choose The Right Saw: You can use a table saw or a circular saw to cut the boards. Cutting the plywood can be difficult as well as dangerous, so it is important to be very careful.
  • Cut The Sides: Start by cutting the longboards to the width that you want according to the space available on the wall. Carefully push the wood through the saw at a consistent speed to ensure a cleaner cut. One of the difficulties of working with plywood is that it is available in large 4' x 8' sheets, so it can be difficult to handle on your own. You can use sawhorses or a roller table to provide support. Cut the strip into two pieces to make the two bookcase sides. You can adjust the measurement up or down for making the bookcase taller or shorter.
  • Cut Bookcase Bottom And Shelves: Cut down a strip of 3/4 inches plywood, wide enough to make the shelves. Then cut a second strip to make the top and bottom shelves. Cut the other two strip pieces to make the top, bottom as well as shelves.
  • Cut The Rabbet Joints: The rabbet is a groove cut right into a piece of wood. Making a rabbet joint will allow the top of the bookcase to sit squarely as well as securely on the 2 sides. With the help of a saw make a 3/8" cut. Cut a track on the end of the shelf by making the cuts straight across the shelf in 1/8 inches increments until the track is wide to the thickness of the plywood sides.
  • Drill The Holes: Make the holes for adjusting shelving along the bookshelf sides. Since the sizes of the book differ and you need to make a change, it's best to make the shelves adjustable so that it is easy to rearrange it.

Step 3: Assembly

  • Top Sides: Apply the glue to the length of the rabbet groove and then put the top in place. To secure the top add pocket screws.
  • Center And Bottom Shelves: After the top of the bookshelf is secure, now attach the bottom shelf. Apply wood glue on the support blocks for the bottom shelf and then set the shelf in the right position. Drill as well as countersink the pilot holes on the side of the bookshelf and then secure the shelf with 2-inch wood screws.
  • Back Panel: A back panel is important to give a bookcase a finished look and will also protect the paint on the wall behind the bookcase.

Step 4: Hang The Bookcase On Wall

  • Make a light perimeter of the bookcase on the wall. Locate all the studs and mark them where you can still see the marks when the bookcase in place. Then, measure from the bottom of the bookcase drawing to the floor.
  • Slide the bookcase up the wall. Hold down the bookcase tight on the wall, use the drill to install one 3-inch screw into the wooden stretcher board right at the top. Continue the process until the head of the screw is just below the surface of the board.
  • Into each stud that passes behind the bookcase drive the screws through the top rail. Come straight down from each screw at the top, and drive the screws through the bottom of the rail into each stud. Drive 2 or more screws on the back of the bookcase right in the wall studs.
