Easy Steps, Tools Needed & Important Tips To Build A Bench Seat With Storage

If you want to build a bench seat with storage yourself at home, you can do so very easily. But in order to perform this task, you first need to collect some tools and then follow the steps carefully to achieve the desired result:

Tools Needed

The tools and the materials that will be used include the following:
  • Ruler & Screwdriver
  • Square & Handsaw
  • Hammer
  • Electric Sander
  • Drop Cloths & Paintbrush
  • Cabinet, as the basis for this bench seat

Steps

  1. Assemble: The first step is to assemble the flat-packed cabinet but without attaching the hinges, door as well as handle. The user can insert one shelf or more as per the need. Also do not put the backing on. Lie the cabinet flat on its back.
  2. Trim And Fit: Trim the pine top, then fit the edging on the three sides of the pine top, the user needs to remember that the long side that will go against the wall will not need edging. Start the process with a short side, gluing and then pinning the edging with the help of pin nails, and also keeping it flush with the top. Continue the edging process on the other two sides, mitering all the corners of the edging, the user can use a square to mark a 45° angle and then cut with the help of a saw.
  3. Sanding: Once the glue is dry then sand it well.
  4. Pine Top: Screw down the new pine top right onto the door with the help of a 32mm wood screws.
  5. Sides Of The Bench Seat: The cupboard, when at the upright position will not have a base, so the user will need to create one as this will also form one of the sides for the bench seat. Cut out a piece from a 6mm hardboard which will flush with the sides of the cabinet. Attach using the wood glue and then secure all along edges with the help of pin nails. Once the glue is dry, the user needs to sand again and fill in the holes using the filler.
  6. Bottom Of The Storage Box: For the bottom the user can either attach the provided backing or leave bottom-less as per the choice.
  7. Screw Holes: Using the filler fill all screw holes and also give the box good sand. Apply a base or primer coat and then 2-3 coats of paint.
  8. Door/Pine Top: Now in this step the user needs to attach the door/pine top on the storage box with the help of a new 175° hinges. This bench seat is a good option for storing all items inside it.

Important Tips

  1. The user can use the paint on the base of the storage bench in any color of choice. It just needs proper sanding and preparation for coat .
  2. The user can either use the shelving provided it is used to section the inside or can leave it open.
  3. It is best to go for a minimal Scandi look simply by leaving the pine as it is, or the user can also varnish it for a darker, rustic or industrial look.
  4. If in case the user ever want to move the bench, remove the contents out first because the backing board that is used on the base won’t be strong enough to handle the weight.
