3 Methods To Blend Chalk Paint On Furniture

Chalk paint, mostly used to create a writing surface such as blackboard, is made up of the mixture of talc, titanium dioxide, acrylic, carbon black, water-glycol, opacifiers, and silica. Chalk paint is also used on wood furniture, below are some important steps/methods to chalk paint your wooden furniture, simply follow the given steps carefully.

Method 1: Preparing the Surface

  1. Cleaning: First start wiping down the furniture in order to get rid of any dust, dirt and debris. Try to wipe down the furniture with a clean, damp rag cloth first. Then use a cleaning wipe like Clorox or Lysol, if You don’t want any dust or grit to get stuck under your chalk paint.
  2. Remove: Before starting your painting work you have to be sure to remove any decorative items, handles, buttons, or other things which you don’t want to paint over. After removing them carefully, now pay attention to how they were installed, where they went. This step will make your reinstallation process very easy. Place each hardware piece into a safe place or bag so that they won't be lost after you start your painting work.
  3. Fill In: If the user is painting old furniture or the new one then be sure to check any marks on it. Look over the furniture first for scratches, indents, or large discolorations. Run your hands on the furniture just to be sure. If you find any scratches, damage area then use a filler like Elmer’s Wood Filler with a putty knife to fix these issues.
  4. Sand: Now use 220 fine-grit sandpaper and use a sanding block or soft sponge for better pressure. These items will keep your sanding even. Start your work from the top to bottom and be sure to sand with the grain if you sand against it then this will deeply damage the furniture.

Method 2: Applying the Paint

  1. Choose: The Chalk paint comes in different types of colors like white, black, light and baby blue. The user can choose any color but keep this in your mind to choose the color according to your furniture.
  2. Painter’s Tape: If the user doesn't want to paint some areas on the furniture then mark them with painter’s tape.
  3. Test: Now test the painter's tape hidden area with paint, if the paint leaks then again apply some painter's tape.
  4. Start Painting: Take a new and soft paintbrush to start your work, simply paint with grains this process will make your painting process easier and will also make your strokes smoother.
  5. Additional Coats: After applying the first coat of chalk paint the furniture will look unfinished and rough. But no need to worry, this is a normal thing, for the first coat of chalk paint wait for this coat to dry completely and then apply another coat of paint immediately, after every coat of chalk paint it will take 30-60 minutes to dry.

Method 3: Completing Your Project

  1. Wax: After your chalk paint has dried completely now apply the wax on your furniture. Use Mini wax Paste Finishing or Soft Wax because this will bond to the chalk paint to create a durable and lasting finish. To apply wax you should use a wax brush or a soft cloth.
  2. Final Coat Of Wax: After applying the wax on your furniture now wait for 10-15 minutes then apply the final coat. Use a new cloth and work in the same manner as you do before, rub your wax on the furniture in small sections. Use a rag to remove any extra wax on it. When you finish your work, swipe some fingers across the furniture to make sure that there are no streaks or damaged area remaining. If there is any area remaining then, simply clean it with a clean cloth to remove the extra wax.
  3. Reinstall: Check if the wax dries fully then, reinstall any hardware.
