How To Bleach Wood Furniture: 3 Methods To Bleach

The furniture made up of wood is best because the life span and durability of wood furniture is good if cared properly, still, after few years they look dirty and old but don't worry there are many ways available to give them a new and shiny look.

3 Methods To Bleach Wood Furniture

Here are the 3 main and easy methods to perform bleaching process on wood furniture. Read these methods and steps carefully to get the best results of wood bleaching.

Bleaching With Varnish Or Stain Remover

  1. Wash: Before starting the wood bleaching process the user needs to wash the wood item with water and a soft rag. After that remove any type of dust and debris from the surface of wood furniture. This process will prepare a good surface for bleaching.
  2. Wear Protective Equipment: Bleach is not safe for eyes and skin, so always remember to wear the gloves and goggles to keep the eyes and skin safe while bleaching the wooden furniture.
  3. Well-ventilated Area: The user needs to work in a well-ventilated area for bleaching process in order to keep the household items clean and safe.
  4. Apply Varnish Or Stain Remover: Now, apply varnish or stain remover with rag or brush, it will remove any type of paint or finish from the surface of the wooden furniture. Leave varnish or stain remover for few minutes then rinse it with clean water.

Bleaching With Oxalic Acid

  1. Use Oxalic Acid: If the user has the weather damage and rust stains issue with the wooden furniture then use oxalic acid.
  2. Mix Oxalic Acid: Mix one gallon (3.8 L) hot water with 12 to 16 ounces (355 to 473 mL) of oxalic acid. Mix this in a glass container, never use plastic or metal container in order to mix this acid.
  3. Wipe The Wood: Use a sponge and dip it into the oxalic acid mixture then wipe the surface of wooden furniture with it. In order to saturate the wood completely, apply 3-4 coats of this mixture.
  4. Dry: Let the wood dry for a while. Once dry apply some new coats of this mixture then dry the wood again.
  5. Rinse Take sponge and rinse the surface of wood with water until the water becomes clean.
  6. Neutralize: Take 2 tbsp (30ml) of baking soda, 1 quart (946 mL) hot water and apply it on wooden furniture for 2 or 3 times then rinse it. Now let the wood dry for a night.
  7. Sand The Wood: Select 220 and 180 grit sandpaper and rub the surface of the wooden furniture, this will make the surface smooth and perfect to apply a finish on wooden furniture.
  8. Apply A Finish: Take smooth brush and simply apply the finish on the wooden furniture.

Bleaching With Two-Part Chemical System

  1. Chemical Bleach: This is the best process to give a new and shiny look to old wooden furniture without any further changes.
  2. Mix: Use glass or plastic container and then mix equal amount of 2 bleaches, never use metal items because the bleach will damage the metal items easily.
  3. Apply The Bleach: Take a clean and soft sponge and dip it in the mixture then apply it on the wooden furniture. Use steady and slow motions while performing this work. Keep applying the mixture until the whole wood gets covered by the mixture.
  4. Neutralize The Bleach: Mix some white vinegar with some water and apply this mixture on the wooden furniture.
  5. Rinse Wood: Now, rinse the wood with clean water. Use sponge for this process.
  6. Let The Wood Dry: Leave the wood for few hours to dry it completely.
  7. Sand The Wood: Use 320-400 grit sandpaper to sand the wood after the drying process. It will remove any fuzzy grains or patches. Clean the dust with a soft cloth.
  8. Neutralize Again: Now, again mix the white vinegar and water then apply it on wood, after few minutes rinse it.
  9. Apply Finish: Safety first, wear goggles and hand gloves before applying finish on the wood. Simply use a soft brush to apply finish on wood, after applying finish on it, let the wood dry for few hours.
