How To Bench Test A Dryer Motor: Step By Step Process To Test A Dryer Motor

Electric as well as gas clothes dryers mostly use an electric motor in order to power the drive belt that spins the laundry drum. The motor is typically secured to the bottom of the appliance exactly near the front, next to a tension pulley assembly that maintains pressure on the belt in order to stop it from slipping. If for any reason, the dryer drum stops rotating, however, the belt is not damaged or impaired in any way, make sure to test the motor with the help of a multimeter in order to check circuit continuity. Detaching the front panel and testing the motor will not take more than half an hour.

Step By Step Process To Test A Dryer Motor

If in case your dryer is not working properly or has stopped working, or you might feel there is something wrong with it, then there will be a problem with the dryer motor. In this situation, it is the best option to test it in order to check if it is working properly. Testing a dryer motor is a very easy task, provided you use the right tools & follow the right technique. The important tools that you may need include a screwdriver & motor. Go through the below-mentioned easy & simple steps carefully in order to test a dryer motor:

Step 1: Turn Off Power

The first and foremost step is to switch off the power supply from the dryer. There are two ways of doing this: you can either unplug the dryer if in case it is plugged in or turn off the circuit breaker switch that it is attached to.

Step 2: Turn Dryer On Its Side

The next step is to turn the dryer on its side in order to access the motor.

Step 3: Remove Belt

As soon as you have located the dryer motor, you need to detach the rubber belt from the motor with the help of your hands or you can also use a screwdriver in order to remove the rubber from the motor.

Step 4: Check For Obstructions In The Blower Fan

After that, scrutinize the inner part of the casing for the blower fan. If in case there are any obvious obstructions, you need to get rid of them immediately so that you can go about your work without any obstacle.

Step 5: Rotate Shaft Of Motor

Finally, you need to rotate the shaft of the motor with the help of your hands. If in case the shaft is grinding or is difficult to turn in some specific spots while turning it, a bad bearing is, in all likelihood, the cause, and you need to replace the motor. However, if the shaft turns easily and gently while turning it, connect the dryer back in and run the motor without the belt on. If the motor runs first-class without the belt, then it is highly possible that a problem is somewhere else in the motor. If the motor is not able to run without the belt, then simply replace the motor.
