How To Attach A Handrail To Drywall Without Studs: 5 Easy Steps To Install A Handrail To Drywall Without Studs

5 Easy Steps To Install A Handrail Or Half-newel Banisters To Drywall Without Studs

Handrails are one of the most important pieces when it comes to home remodeling. In addition to decorative values, handrails are extremely important to build a safe environment for everyone living in the house. You can attach handrails to stair railings & drywalls in your homes. Half-newel banisters are mostly used to give a beautiful & stylish look, particularly, when there is no stud for them to secure firmly in position. Newel posts that are trimmed in half from top to bottom are very useful in finishing off a stretch of the handrail. This, in turn, gives the handrail together with the stairs a finishing point on the wall. It does add some support or assistance to the handrail, but generally, if there's not a stud in place, it will not be useful as a load-bearing component of the stair rail system. Follow the below-mentioned simple steps carefully in order to attach a handrail to drywall with no studs in place:
  1. Place The Handrail Against The Wall: First of all, position the half-newel banister post or handrail against the wall just as though it were previously installed. Go through or look over the points where the banister gets in contact with the wall. Make four marks, placing evenly at a distance from one another, focused on the front of the half-newel banister, where it has satisfactory or acceptable contact with the wall. Make sure not to mark at a point where there is a profile curve or dip.
  2. Lay The Handrail Flat On A Worktable: The next step is to lay the half-newel or handrail flat on a worktable. Drill down into the post at each mark to a depth of 1/2 inch with the help of a 1/2-inch Forstner bit and a cordless drill. After that, take out the 1/2-inch bit. Place, fit, or push a 3/8-inch Forstner bit into the drill and drill the remaining of the way through the post.
  3. 3/8-inch Bit: Now, stand the post in position just as though it were previously installed. Insert the 3/8-inch bit into each hole before drilling through the drywall & make sure to use the holes in the banister as a guide.
  4. 3/8-inch Toggle Bolts: Next, place 3/8-inch toggle bolts into the holes, & ensure that they pass all the way through the banister as well as the drywall. Tighten or affix the toggle bolts securely with the help of a Phillips screwdriver in order to attach the half-newel banister post or handrail to the wall.
  5. Apply Glue: Finally, apply a few drops of glue into each hole before tapping a 1/2-inch wood button into each hole.
