How To Apply Wood Stain With A Rag: Steps To Apply

Steps to Apply Wood Stain with a Rag

Wood Stain refers to a type of paint that is used to color the wood surfaces. Wood stain can also be defined as a translucent or transparent agent that is used to color the wooden surfaces. The coloring agent present in the wood stain is actually a dye that dissolves into the liquid. The steps to apply a wood stain with a rag are as follows:
  1. Collect Required Materials:
Before beginning the process, the user needs to collect all the required materials such as wood stain, pre-stain wood conditioner, polyurethane, sandpaper, sanding block, and rags.
  2. Sand The Surface:
After that, the user needs to sand the entire surface in order to remove the scratches and smooth the surface. It has been recommended by the experts to start sanding with 100 grit sandpaper. First, the user needs to cut the sandpaper as per the sanding block size and wrap the sandpaper around the block. Then, the user needs to sand the surface in back and forth motions in the direction of the wood grain by applying moderate pressure. The user needs to continue with the step until the surface doesn't have any visible scratches and the surface is leveled. After sanding with the rough sandpaper, the user needs to sand the surface again with 220 grit sandpaper.
  3. Clean The Surface:
The next step will be to clean the sanding dust from the surface by using a paper towel or clean rag. If some dust cannot be removed with a clean dry rag, the user needs to damp the rag with mineral spirits and wipe the surface down with it. The step is necessary as wood stain works effectively on a clean surface. After cleaning, the user needs to examine the wooden surface imperfections such as scratches, blemishes, etc. If there are any imperfections, the user needs to sand and clean the surface again.
  4. Apply Wood Conditioner:
After the surface is clean & dry, the user needs to apply the pre-stain wood conditioner over it with a clean rag. The conditioner will allow the wood to absorb stain in equal & constant amounts. It has been recommended by the experts to apply wood conditioner in wipe motion by following the direction of the wood grain. The user needs to let the wood absorb the conditioner for 15 minutes before wiping off the excess conditioner with another clean rag.
  5. Apply Wood Stain:
The next step will be to apply stain over the entire wood surface with a separate clean rag. First, the user needs to mix the wood stain thoroughly and then dip a rag into the stain. The user needs to make sure that the stain on the rag is controllable rather than dipping. After that, the user needs to wipe the surface with a stained rag by following the directions of the wood grain. The user can re-wet the rag as required during the process. After applying the first coat of stain, the user needs to wait for 15 minutes before applying a lighter second coat. The non-absorbed stain should be wiped off from the surface with a clean rag.
  6. Apply Polyurethane:
The last step will be to let the stain dry completely before applying a top coat of polyurethane over the wooden surface. The topcoat protects the wood from wear & tear, scratches, and moisture. It has been recommended by the experts to apply spray polyurethane over the surface in 2-3 light coats. The user needs to let each coat of polyurethane dry as per label instructions before applying the next coat. After applying polyurethane, the user needs to let the surface dry for about 24 hours before putting it to use.
