Easy Steps To Stain Soft Wood Furniture

In order to apply stain to old and damaged furniture, you have to follow the given steps carefully, after following the steps one by one you will get the best results of staining:

Fix Defects

  1. Inspect The Surface: The first step to start staining process is to inspect the soft wood furniture like corners, seams and edges.
  2. Use Hammer: If there is any type of nails, screws, etc then remove them with the help of hammer.
  3. Wood Filler: Now, apply some wood filler on the holes, cracks and on the damaged area. Use putty knife in order to make this process easy. Apply 2-3 coats until you see the smooth surface for sanding process.
  4. Dry: Let the soft wood furniture dry for an hour before starting the sanding process.

Sand Surface

  1. Choosing Sandpaper: For sanding the softwood furniture select 100 grit sandpaper.
  2. Rubbing Process: Rub the sandpaper slowly on the wood filled area otherwise it will pull up the wood filler from the holes and cracks.
  3. Wipe: Wipe the dust with a tack cloth or with a towel (paper) soaked in mineral spirits.
  4. Again Sand: Now, repeat sanding with 150 grit sandpaper, again clean the dust then repeat sanding process with 220 grit sandpaper.

Apply the Stain

  1. Clean: First clean your softwood furniture thoroughly, and clean the work surface with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  2. Dip: Dip the edge of the paint brush in the stain then apply a thin layer of stain on the surface of the soft wood.
  3. Examine: Check again if you didn't stain properly with brush then use a soft, lint free cloth and again stain on the remaining area.
  4. Cloth: You can use a cloth to even out blotches and for blending the edges between brushstrokes.
  5. Dry: Allow the softwood furniture to dry for nearly 24 hours.


Easy Steps To Stain Hard Wood Furniture

Follow the below given steps in order to apply stain to Hard Wood Furniture:

Fix Defects

  1. Wood Filler: First make a roll bead of wood filler and put it on the edge of a putty knife then apply the filler to holes, cracks, knots and nail holes until you got the smooth surface for the sanding process of the hardwood. Use the putty knife to smooth out the filler.
  2. Sand The Filler: After filling the wood filler, now sand the surface with normal grit sandpaper.

Apply The Finish

  1. Apply: Now you have to apply a thin coat of polyurethane to your hard wood using a 2” (5 centimeter) paintbrush.
  2. Blend The Brush: Blend your brush strokes between sections by lightly stroking the intersection with the paintbrush. Perform this process for about 2-3 times.
  3. Dry: Allow the hardwood to dry for overnight then sand the hardwood with 280 grit sandpaper.
  4. Apply A Second Coat: After sanding the hardwood now apply a second coat of polyurethane and let the hardwood dry for overnight now you don't have to sand the final coat.

Sand the Surface

  1. Sander: First you have to wrap the 100-grit sandpaper around the work surface of the electric sander.
  2. Grip: Use gloves, eye goggles and face mask then adjust the grip on the handle of the electric sander.
  3. Directions: Now, move your electric sander back and forth in the direction of the wood grain until you have sanded the entire surface of your hardwood wooden furniture.
  4. Wipe: Now, wipe the entire surface of the hardwood with a tack cloth or with a paper towel dipped in mineral spirits.
  5. Remove: Remove the used 100-grit sandpaper from the electric sander and discard it then clip the 150-grit sandpaper to the electric sander then again repeat this process but this time with 220 grit sandpaper.
