Steps to Apply Polycrylic To Painted Furniture

Polycrylic is used to protect the finish, natural grain and the surface of your painted wooden furniture. Do you have new furniture and you want to protect its paint and natural grain then this article is for you. Simply read the specifications of polycrylic and follow the given steps carefully to get the best results of your job.

Specifications Of Polyacrylic

  • Polycrylic dries faster when compared to polyurethane. Polyurethane may take nearly 12 hours in order to get dry fully but the polycrylic takes only half time of it.
  • Polycrylic is more affordable and best for beginners or for DIY (DO IT YOURSELF) projects.
  • Polycrylic is entirely crystalline, unlike many polyurethane products.
  • Polyurethane is highly flammable and also contains toxic but the polycrylic is totally safe for interior surfaces, even in poor ventilated areas.
  • Polycrylic is a water-based formula so it can be washed easily with soap and water, but cleaning the polyurethane after use is harder.

Steps

  1. Deal With Cracks And Chips: If you have any chips, cracks, dings, and dent then you can solve these issues using wood filler. Simply, apply wood filler over the affected area before smoothing it with putty knife and let it dry. Select the wood filler which supports using polycrylic on it.
  2. Surface Preparation: Before using the polycrylic on wooden furniture you have to prepare the surface of your furniture. Start your work with 100 grit medium sandpaper, then use 150 grit finer sandpaper, and finish your work with 22 grit sandpaper to remove scratches that were left behind.
  3. Liquid Polycrylic Use: After you finish your sanding process, now you have to stir your polycrylic well, until it becomes milky. Use a good superior brush and apply a thin layer of polycrylic according to the direction of the wood grain.
  4. Dry: After applying polycrylic, now let it dry for minimum 2 hours before following the next step.
  5. Aerosol Polycrylic Use: Aerosol is a spray form of polycrylic, shake it well for 2 minutes before using it. Spray it on your furniture and repeat the shaking process after each minute of using the product, shake for 10 seconds. Hold your spray vertically at around twelve inches. After finishing the spray process, let the furniture dry for at least 30-40 minutes before applying next coat to your furniture.
  6. Final Steps: This is your final step, use an extra fine-sandpaper (220 grit) to sand the surface of your furniture to make it ready for the primer. Once finished, apply a second coat of polycrylic and sand again. If you want some more coats then repeat this process. After applying the next coat, let your furniture dry for at least 24 hours.
