How To Antique Furniture With Paint And Stain?

In order to give the furniture an antique or aged look with the use of paint & stain, the user needs to follow the below-given steps:
  1. Clean The Furniture:
The first and basic step in every procedure is to clean the furniture using a rag in order to remove residue from the furniture surface. After that, the user needs to remove all the hardware and doors from the furniture using a screwdriver and place them at a safe place in order to keep track of them.
  2. Sand The Furniture:
The next step will be to sand down the entire furniture surface using a sander that will help in breaking the top layer of polyurethane holding the furniture surface. The user needs to sand the corners of the furniture where the sander can't access easily with a sheet of sandpaper. The step helps the primer and paint to adhere and also helps in distressing sharp edges and corners in order to give the furniture a distressed look.
  3. Apply Primer & Paint:
After that, the user needs to wipe down the sanding dust off the furniture and apply a thin coat of primer on to the furniture by using a roller and a brush. Once the primer dries, the user needs to apply a coat of paint on to the furniture. In case, the furniture consists of laminate veneer, the user needs to apply a high adhesion primer and if the furniture consists of solid wood, then the normal primer should be used on to the furniture before painting. After the furniture surface is painted with a roller, the user needs to eliminate roller stipple with the help of a brush while the paint is still wet. The user needs to smooth the paint lightly with a brush that will give the paint a brushed on look that suit better with the antique look.
  4. Sand The Furniture Again:
Once the paint dries, the user needs to sand the surface again in order to give the furniture a distressed look. The user needs to focus more on the edges of the furniture and remove the paint and primer gently in order to allow the underlying wood to show through. It is the user’s personal choice as to how much wood he wants to show through the topcoats.
  5. Apply Stain:
The next step after that is to apply a coat of stain over the paint with a cloth followed by wiping the excess stain away. Once the first coat of stain dries, the user needs to apply another coat of stain in order to achieve a deep antique look. The user can also apply a different color of stain for the second coat in order to get a layered look.
  6. Apply Polyurethane:
Once the stain dries, the user needs to give it a finishing coat of polyurethane that will seal the stain and increase the durability of antique look furniture. In case, the user applied an oil-based stain on to his furniture, he needs to follow it up with the oil-based polyurethane as well.
  7. Reinstall Hardware & Doors:
The last step will be to reinstall the hardware and doors back to the furniture using old screws and hinges. As the user has changed the look of his furniture, he needs to install new knobs to it that should match the new style.
